1 American Revolution 8-2.1-2 The French and Indian War and the Causes to the Revolution

2 Writs of Assistance  Search Warrants used by British colonial officials to find smuggled goods.

3 Massacre  Term used by the patriots to spread propaganda through out the colonies to gain support for Boston and their trouble with Britain.  The actual term means mass killing. In the “Boston Massacre”, 5-7 were killed after an angry colonial mob rushed the customs house in downtown Boston.

4 Civil Strife  A disturbance to protest a policy or set of laws within a colony or country.  Sometimes it becomes a revolution or war.

5 1 st Continental Congress  Met In Carpenters Hall in Philadelphia to protest the Coercive Acts. Gadsden, Middleton, Lynch and Edward Rutledge represented South Carolina.

6 Revolutionary War  The war of revolt between Great Britain and the American Colonies.

7 British Crown  The King or Queen in England.

8 Parliament  The Law making body in the British Government. House of Lords and House of Commons.

9 Stamp Act 1765  British Tax on all printed materials. A stamp had to be purchased along with the document or printed material.

10 Duty or Tariff  British tax on imported goods

11 Direct Tax  Tax paid by an individual to the Government.

12 Indirect Tax  The British taxed Colonists on many goods. This was a direct tax.

13 Stamp Act Congress  Colonists from each Colony organized to oppose the taxes from England.

14 Boycott  When the colonists refused to purchase certain goods because of the tax.

15 Repeal  To have reversed. The stamp act congress was able to get the King to repeal the stamp act.

16 Tea Act  Part of the Townshend Duty imposed on British East India Tea coming into the colony. It was designed to help the failing tea company get more money.

17 Boston Tea Party  The Boston Sons of Liberty dumped the tea into the Boston Harbor dressed as Indians in protest for the tea tax.

18 Intolerable Acts  The acts passed against Boston, including the act that closed the Boston Harbor for dumping the tea. This was the name the colonists gave the new laws

19 Continental Congress  Colonists from each colony met to discuss the acts being forced on them by England.
