Do Now: 1. Analyze the following images. 2. How do these images reflect African culture prior to European Imperialism?

2. Imperialism In Africa
Europeans felt that Africans were not using the natural resources from their land, meanwhile the Europeans needed natural resources for industrialization.
Europeans met at the Berlin Conference in 1884 and used military force and “trickery” in order to colonize Africa.

3. Domain-Specific Vocabulary
Maji Maji Rebellion: a violent resistance to colonial German rule by several indigenous communities in German East Africa
Shaka Zulu: one of the most influential monarchs of the Zulu Kingdom.
Menelik II: Emperor of Ethiopia (1889–1913). One of Ethiopia’s greatest rulers; expanded the empire almost to its present-day borders; repelled an Italian invasion in 1896.
