1 Un Repaso del subjuntivo
Unidad 8

2 El Subjuntivo: El concepto
The subjunctive is a MOOD not a TENSE. The Subjunctive mood, like the Indicative mood, has several tenses (present, present perfect, past…)

3 El concepto Tense vs mood
Tense tells us when the action is taking place (present, past or future) Mood tells us the attitude of the speaker towards the action (indicative, subjunctive, or imperative) Tense vs mood

4 En inglés We use the subjunctive rarely in English but much more frequently in Spanish! I hope you have fun. BUT in Spanish we would say: I hope that you have fun. THAT= que in Spanish

5 El indicativo The indicative is used to describe facts. It is what is considered true/certain. Mrs. Boyce is a Spanish teacher. I go to CB South High School. I know that Spring is here. It is true that there is a quiz on Monday.

6 El subjuntivo The subjunctive is used to express feelings, judgements, and emotions about actions. It is what is desirable, possible, doubtful, uncertain. It is important that Joe works harder. I hope that you clean your room. Just because we want these things, doesn’t mean they will happen or are certain.

7 Una frase en el subjuntivo
Subj. Indicator + que + verb in the subjunctive Subjunctive indicators are statements of: will (indirect commands) necessity obligation emotion/feeling doubt possibility

8 Formula para usar el subjuntivo
The subjunctive can ONLY be used after the conjunction que. Usually, there are 2 subjects: 1 for the verb before que, which triggers the subjunctive; and a different subject for the verb after que, which is in the subjunctive. If there is no “que”, the second verb will not be conjugated, and there is not a second subject in the sentence. Mi madre insiste en hacer la cama. VS. Mi madre insiste en QUE yo haga la cama.

9 Los pasos para formar el presente del subjuntivo
Consider the YO form of the present indicative. Drop the letter “O” Apply the opposite vowel from that of the infinitive -AR: e, es, e, emos, en -ER/-IR: a, as, a, amos, an

10 CAR, GAR, ZAR SACAR : saque… PAGAR: pague… ABRAZAR: abrace…
Spelling change occurs in ALL FORMS of the subjunctive.

11 STEM CHANGERS -AR & -ER are SHOE VERBS (no stem change in nosotros form) -IR stem changers have a stem change in usual forms (THE SHOE), and on in the nosotros form (it MAY be different than that of the other forms) Nosotros stem change for –IR stem changer: E-I O-U

12 IRREGULARES SER: sea IR: vaya DAR: dé, des, dé, demos, den
ESTAR: esté, etsés, esté, estemos, estén SABER: sepa

13 ¿Indicativo o subjuntivo?
CB south is a big school. I hope that she gets an A. My mom insists that I make my bed. I am sad that she is leaving tomorrow. We doubt that it will snow this week. I know that Spanish class is difficult.
