Or lack thereof Single guys that exploited land = Fur Trade Catholic Priests to convert natives Ohio River Valley a cause for contention Valuable for getting Beaver pelts but “owned” by Virginia/Pennsylvania George Washington and the Battle of Jumonville Glen Tanacharison... That tricky native

French Indian War cont. French start the winning and colonists like George Washington become a little concerned William Pitt replaces Braddock and helps Britain start to beat back the French in 1757 Gains allies in the Iroquois At the battle of Quebec the British sneak over cliffs and defeat the French for a final battle. Officially ends with the Treaty of Paris signed in 1763

What the Treaty Says Britain gets Canada, Florida, territory east of the Mississippi River Natives get the boot Proclamation of 1763 says no colonist can settle past the Appalachian Mt.

Money Problems The French and Indian War was costly (doubled their national debt) so the British decided the colonists should pay Sugar Act: Cut the tax in half, allowed British to check for smugglers, and if convicted brought to British court and tried Stamp Act: Tax on printed documents, (first on colonists goods)

Problems aplenty Townshend Act: Tax on paint, paper, glass and TEA People become angry and protest Boston Massacre Tea Act: British wanted to save the British East India Company so allowed them to sell their tea to the colonists without a tax... So it made tea cheaper for colonists Respond with the Boston Tea Party Ruined 18,000 pounds of tea

Intolerable Acts King George III was furious at Boston so passed the Intolerable acts Closed down Boston Harbor Quartering Act Martial Law The colonists hold first continental congress in 1774 and declare their rights claiming that if Britain uses force they will fight back
