2 Journal Entry 2 October 14 th, 2015 “Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained” (Marie Curie). Read the quote above. What is your definition of perseverance? Describe a personal situation where you showed perseverance. What is your definition of confidence? What are some verbal and nonverbal ways one can show confidence? How do both of these character traits relate to public speaking? Write in complete sentences. Minimum of 75 words. Must write and circle number of words at the bottom of the entry for full credit.

5 Nonverbal Communication Nonverbal Communication: a system of symbolic behaviors that includes all forms of communication except words. Example: body language “The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said.” - Peter F. Drucker Austrian writer and editor 5

6 Nonverbal Communication 6 All the ways we convey messages and feelings without words. Organized into three categories: – Sounds (tone of voice, laughter) – Body Language (movement, posture, eye contact) – Environmental factors (touch, distance, objects, etc.)

7 Functions of Nonverbal Communication Expands verbal communication by: – Reinforcing a message – Contradicting the message – Substituting for messages Conveys emotional and relationship dimensions of a message. 7

8 Characteristics of Nonverbal Communication Subconscious: nonverbal communication is often sent and received on a subconscious level. We are usually not aware of the messages we send nonverbally. 8 Contextual: nonverbal communication depends on the situation in which is occurs. Ambiguous: the meaning is open to interpretation and often confusing. Cultural: nonverbal communication has a distinct cultural nature.

9 Nonverbal Communication & Professional Image A positive and professional image is important to your success in in public speaking Through nonverbal communication you can create a professional image that projects – confidence – poise – assertiveness 9

10 Types of Nonverbal Communication – pitch – inflection – quality – laughter – vocalizations (um, er, mm-hmm?) 10 range volume tone duration (rate and tempo) pauses and silence

11 Types of Nonverbal Communication – dress and grooming – posture – muscle tone and tension – movement and gesture – facial communication – eye contact Body Talk 11

12 Types of Nonverbal Communication – space and distance – territory – touch – time – artifacts and objects – color – fragrance and odor Environmental Cues 12

14 Glad to Meet You 1.Silently break into your interview groups from yesterday. (Remember, we’re working on nonverbal communication!!) 2.Get your written interviews from the in-box. 3.Pick 2 facts about each person to SILENTLY communicate to the class. 4.You and your partner should now pair with another set of partners. Take turns SILIENTLY communicating what you have learned about each other, and see if the other group can figure out what you and your partner are trying to communicate. 5.When you finish, make sure to return your written interviews to the in-box.

15 Exit Slip Make a t-chart on a sheet of paper that looks like this Glows Grows Under glows, list 3 areas you feel confident in from today’s lesson and explain why. Under grows, list 2 areas you feel you need to strengthen before your first pop-up speech tomorrow. Under your completed chart, describe one obstacle you believed you overcame with today’s activity.
