3 WHAT ARE FOSSIL FUELS? Coal, oil, and natural gas are known as fossil fuels They are formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals. When the plants and animals died and became buried deep in the earth, the heat and pressure of the earth’s layers slowly transformed them into coal, natural gas, and oil.

4 NONRENEWABLE VS. RENEWABLE NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES Can not be replaced or take a very, very long time to be replaced or grown back. Examples: coal, oil, natural gas RENEWABLE RESOURCES Can be replaced or grown back Examples: wind, solar, water

5 WHAT ARE FOSSIL FUELS USED FOR? Converted into energy to power and heat our homes and fuel modes of transportation, including planes, buses, boats, and cars. Petroleum, a fossil fuel, used to make a variety of materials including plastics. 12 3
