The Maya (300 BCE-900CE) Location – The Mexican and Central American rainforests (on the Yucatan Peninsula) – Major City: Chichén Itzá Most well-known city Used for religious ceremonies and as a center of trade

Government – Groups of allied city-states ruled by a king Economy – Agriculture and trade grew maize (corn), squash, beans Trade linked Mayan city-states

Government – Warrior-based group ruled by emperor Economy – Based on agriculture and the payment of tribute from conquered peoples Jade, cacao, cotton, gold, maize
