7 Terms I need to know!! 1. Writ- requires that an official who has arrested someone bring that person to court and explain why they are being held 2. Plaintiff- Party that brings charges against an alleged criminal 3. Bill of attainder- punishes accused person w/o a trial 4. Lawsuit- term for a civil case that has gone to court. 5. Defendant- Individual or group accused of a crime 6. Misdemeanor- crime that holds less serious consequences than a felony 7. Tort- wrongful act involving damage or injury 8. Precedents- legal opinions that became part of the common law 9. Grand Jury- Group of 12-23 citizens who decide whether there is enough evidence to prove that a crime was committed 10. Due Process of Law- require the govt. to follow the law and treat all people equally

8 11. Ex post facto law- a law allowing punishment for an act that was not unlawful when it was committed 12. Felony- serious crime, such as murder 13.
