3 - Power: The ability to control or influence others - Authority: the right to use power to influence or control the behavior of others.

4 - Treaty: A written agreement between two or more nations. - Britain and France met in Paris in 1763 to conclude the French and Indian War. Treaty of Paris

5 What do you think the provisions (terms) of the Treaty of Paris included?

6 The terms included: - France gave up all land in North America with the exception of New Orleans. - Britain was given Canada and the land from the Appalachians to the Mississippi River. - Britain was given Florida by Spain. - The French gave Spain New Orleans and lands west of the Mississippi River. 7 Britain Gains Ohio River Valley which was good for farming and valuable for fur trading, also given Florida France Lost all land claims in North America. 8 - Land claims were not the only result of the French and Indian War. - England won, but by the end of the war she was about 146 million pounds in debt.

10 - Colonial settlers began to move into the region - How do you think Native Americans living in this region reacted?

11 - Most Native American groups feared the potential loss of land and hunting ground. - Chief Pontiac was an Ottowa leader who wanted to stop the loss of Native American hunting grounds. - He united the tribes of the Great Lakes region and the Ohio River Valley region to fight against the British settlers PONTIAC’S REBELLION

13 - Chief Pontiac wanted to fight the settlers and united the tribes in the Ohio River Valley. - In 1763, Pontiac and his united tribes began attacking British military forts. - After several months the Native Americans were running low on supplies and signed a treaty with the British. - These conflicts are called Pontiac’s War or Pontiac’s Rebellion. PONTIAC’S REBELLION

14 - As a result of Pontiac’s War: - British still controlled the Ohio River Valley but feared more Native American attacks on British settlers. - What would be needed to protect British settlers from Native American attacks?

15 - Soldiers, forts, other military supplies. - MONEY! - Why is money a problem for the British?

16 - Money is a problem because Britain is in huge debt from the French and Indian War. - Many British officials blamed colonial settlers for the conflicts with Native Americans stating that they had no right to claim land in the Ohio River Valley. - These leaders were worried about more fighting. - What could British leaders do to prevent further conflict between colonial settlers and Native Americans?

18 - King George III issued a proclamation stating that colonists could not settle past the line, neither could the explore or hunt. - The land past the line was to be used by Native Americans only. - How do you think colonists felt about this line?

19 - Colonists were angry about the Proclamation Line of 1763. - Did not like being controlled by the British government when they had been left alone for so long. - tension begins to develop between the colonists and Great Britain.
