CLOTHING On your “do now” piece of paper, answer the following question: Turn to your neighbor What material is their top made of? Discuss what it took to make each partner’s shirt. Think about the four factors of production we talked about last week!
6
OBJECTIVE: DESCRIBE KEY INVENTIONS THAT FURTHERED THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY
7
TEXTILE What is the textile industry? Cloth, woven fabric
8
THE TEXTILE REVOLUTION Farmers produced bigger crops. One of the most important was cotton. Used for everything More cotton—people wanted to find ways to turn it into useful products fast

INVENTIONS Flying Shuttle 1733- watchmaker John Kay Shuttle that moved back and forth on wheels Boat-shaped piece of wood to which yarn was attached Allowed a weaver to work twice as fast Spinning Jenny 1764- by James Hargeaves A spinning wheel that allowed a worker to spin 6-8 threads at a time. Later models could spin as many as 80 threads Named “Jenny” in honor of his daughter (wife) Water Frame 1769- by Richard Arkwright Used water to operate spinning wheels Spinning could be done by a machine instead of a person! Owners could spin more cotton
10
Spinning Mule 1779- by Samuel Crompton Combined features of the spinning jenny and water frame Made thread stronger and finer than earlier machines Power Loom 1785- Edmund Cartwright Boosted weaving production Cotton Gin 1793- by Eli Whitney Machine to remove the seeds from the cotton Allowed the workers to pick and clean ten times more cotton than they had before
11
Factories had new machines & increased the production of goods. Making goods in greater quantities than ever before! The problem: not all factories were located near a source of water to run the machines
12
STEAM POWER James Watt: 1705- invented the steam engine Used fired to heat water & produce steam A way to power machinery w/out relying on waterpower Steam engines revolutionized not only business, but also transportation Ships & locomotives improved travel & trade
