.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 1. I took Distance Learning because: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wanted to take the psychology course and when I learned that it was also a distance learning course, I was excited. - It was where my course was offered but I had been in a distance learning class before and absolutely loved it. - My school did not offer statistics, and my parents suggested I should take it in preparation for college. I was interested in taking a forensic science class and in my school its only available through DL. - I wanted to learn about Marine Science and they didn’t offer it at my school. - There is no other French 4 or 5 class in this school. - The class was only offered via DL. My past experiences with this format however have been really good and therefore I also took the course because I enjoyed the DL classroom. I needed another class and I wanted to see what the distance learning room was like. - I needed to fulfill an art credit at my school. No other classes fit into my schedule. I wanted a challenging course which the school did not offer. It was a great opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school. I was switched into it after both my electives were cut. Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Students most frequently said they took Distance Learning because: They wanted that particular subject. The subject they wanted was only offered in DL. They needed that course. They were interested in the technology. They wanted AP or college credit. They were interested in meeting new students. They wanted to try something different.

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 2. What did you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ The teacher was very approachable, outgoing and made it extremely easy to learn. I also liked how interactive we were able to be with other classes. - I was exposed to a college class before I got to college and found the material interesting. I also liked being able to discuss ideas with classes in different schools. - I liked that the "remote" class was so involved. They came to our school to visit, see a holocaust survivor and to see our teleconference with Dr. Gordan from the University of North Dakota. All the activities we did, all the projects we did that helped me learn, the teleconferences with a person about psych and all the other speakers. - We used more outside sources, movies and internet, to talk about subjects. The teacher interested me in the different topics we discussed in class. I really liked what we learned this year in this class, I learned some things about myself that I didn’t know before and explains a lot of things for me. The teacher taught normally as if she were actually in the classroom for the most part. Interesting ideas. I liked the technology and that I was able to take a class that I wouldn’t have normally been able to take. Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as liked by DL students: Meeting and interacting with different students, teachers and schools. A new experience working with the advanced technology. Interesting and comfortable learning environment. The opportunity to take a class not otherwise offered. The subject or course material. The teacher or teaching assistant.

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 3. What didn’t you like about Distance Learning? ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I didn’t like the occasional feedback in the speakers, but most everything was fine. - It was sometimes hard to hear people from other sites but that was unusual. - I didn’t like the interference we got from "cell phone" use. I didn’t like how our remote site this year didn’t participate. I felt that the teacher needed to encourage them but nearly no discussion was had with them. - In my specific class the teacher was more focused on the "home" school where she was and I felt it was sort of hard to participate and join in discussions. - I wish the teacher could have came here at least once or vice versa. - I think it makes the class a little more stressful. I don’t feel that it was as personal but still learned a lot and my questions were always answered. The other schools disrupting and always talking, the host school always tapping the microphones and the teacher not paying attention to us. The bell schedules were off by a couple minutes. I didn’t like that both schools had different days that caused the class to be cancelled. Less days to work! I feel like if I did need help it wouldn’t be one on one, it would be either in front of both classes or through email, and that doesn’t work for me. Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Technical problems with audio or poor student/microphone/camera positioning. Disruptive students or lack of discipline. Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as disliked by DL students: Lack of extra help or lack of one-on-one with the teacher. Lack of interaction with or lack of attention from teacher or other students. Not dealing effectively with bell schedule or school calendar differences. * The most frequent response to this question indicated that many students found nothing to dislike. “ It is no different than a normal class. I liked everything about distance learning.”

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 4. What changes would you suggest for the Distance Learning classes? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I would suggest maybe more than one meet up between the different schools to do activities together. - To have the course teacher travel to our school a little more. I would suggest that there should be an easier way to get more work to the other school besides the noisy fax machine and the 3 day long mail delivery. - Every student should be required to have an email. I cannot think of any changes only to enhance the experience with new equipment when available. - Better microphones, possibly better TVs. Set up times where if we needed help we could contact the teacher outside of our class time. - In the beginning of the course, learn more about the students, get to know each other better. - Have more student interactions rather than just teacher-student interactions. I would suggest stronger discipline in the class without the teacher because their talking makes it hard to hear. - All students need to respect the teacher. Working to have a more universal schedule so that we are able to match up with our own classes. Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently suggested changes: More discipline to deal with disruptive and disrespectful students. Technical improvements and better student/microphone/camera positioning. Visits by teachers to remote classes and or combined class field trips. More balanced attention to classes and better interaction. Deal more effectively with bell schedule and school calendar differences. Note: Comments indicating that a student did not feel any changes were necessary were more frequent than all of the categories above combined. “I was satisfied with distance learning and would not suggest any changes.” “The course seemed to be very beneficial and works well as it is.”

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 5. What surprised you about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I was nervous about learning through a screen but I was surprised to find out that it was fun. - That you still get the same amount of teaching even though youre not in a regular classroom. – That educational and personal connections could be made so easily with students from the other sites. - I was actually surprised how much I liked it. It was a great experience and I would recommend that everyone take at least one DL class. - Even though we were miles away and on TV we still could have stimulating educational conversation. - How easy it was to adapt to being on camera while learning. - There were no barriers between us and Mayfield. - How well everything runs and how smoothly the teachers and aides work togeher. Nothing really, I’ve taken it before..it just surprised me how smart the other school was. How technology really impacts our lives and without DL these classes wouldn’t be offered. - I was surprised that we could see ourselves, also that they could hear everything we said. – I was surprised at how well the technology works and how much the microphones pick up. I feel like both sides don’t receive the same amount of attention. - That it is harder because you have to let the teacher pay attention to the other kids that aren’t at our school. Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as surprising about distance learning: That it is unexpectedly easy to become comfortable with the system. Interaction with remote teachers and students was easy. The environment is comfortable and enjoyable. It worked so well. An appreciation for the advanced technology. It was harder or in someway less than what was expected. Little or nothing surprised me.

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments I didn’t feel there were any limitations. Yes, the teacher did make effort(s) to compensate for limitations in the DL system. No, the teacher did not make an effort to compensate for limitations in the DL system. 6. Did you feel the teacher made an effort to compensate for any limitations in the DL system? Host SitesReceive Sites Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “No”) Please describe what you wish your teacher could have done. ______________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ She didn’t pay attention to the remote sites very much. – I wish he had asked how the other schools were doing and for their input more. - I wish the teacher had paid more attention to us. I wish the teacher explained more and was more thorough and detailed with labs etc. - He could've gotten the other class involved more and been more clear on assignments. The teacher could have made more of an effort to get things to us on time. She could have been more flexible. I wish the teacher had more control over class. The teacher could have rotated between school districts for participation. Everything was constantly confusing. They didn’t know how to use the technology which limited everything we did. Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Students that feel the teacher did not make an effort to compensate Section C Students wished that the teacher would: Not ignore their remote students or pay less attention to the receive sites. Been more organized with assignments and notes. Visit the remote students at least once. Only 4.9% of the responses indicated that the students felt their teacher did not make an effort to compensate for limitations with the system.

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “Yes”) Please describe the efforts the teacher made to compensate. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ She taught from the other school a few times and had 15 minutes before class started at our school to talk with them and answer any questions they had. – Our teacher made numerous trips to the other school and explained everything in perfect detail. - Our teacher came to our school at least twice since we didn’t really know who he was except for being on a screen. I liked that. - If it was necessary that he be in the room for us to do something, he would visit our class personally. He always asked us if we had questions and was very kind and considerate. - She always tried to make sure we could hear the other school, she would send them work if they weren’t there. – Our teacher did not allow any cell phones. - She did everything wonderfully and communicated with all the classes. When there were power outages she would email us if we needed to know anything. – The teacher fully utilized blackboard making any limitations vanish. – Our teacher gave us his phone number, email, extra help after school, etc. - Always asked if sound, situations, etc. worked for students, worked with students using emails. - She always found a way to contact us even if she was absent (email, phone). She called in any errors with the systems if there was a problem. - When people couldn’t hear, volume was adjusted. Section C

.. SAN-HFM Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009 – 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Most Frequently Recognized DL Teacher Efforts Students that feel the teacher did make an effort to compensate: Visited receive sites and promoted interaction between schools. Made e-mail, Web, BlackBoard and/or phone contact available. Made efforts to resolve technical issues. Provided extra help and review sessions. Used the technology to its best advantage.
