.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 1. I took Distance Learning because: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I enjoy working with animals. I wanted to take veterinary science which was not offered directly through our school. - I had taken AP before and thought I would do so again. I also had taken distance learning classes before and enjoyed it. - I love biology, I heard about bioethics and I wanted to take it. - I want to go into a job with people with disabilities and sign language is a good skill to know. This class was required for me to graduate and I didn’t have enough room in my schedule during the normal school day. I wanted to take AP Psychology and it was only offered in the DL room. - I was interested in WWI but it wasn’t taught at my school. It’s a good experience that helps you interact with students from other schools through the televisions. - I thought it would be a fun interesting way to learn something that I really enjoyed learning about. I wanted to take a college level course and it was not offered at our school. I thought it would be an opportunity to meet other people and would be different from other courses. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Students most frequently said they took Distance Learning because: They wanted that particular subject. The subject they wanted was only offered in DL. They were interested in the technology. They were interested in meeting new students. They needed that course. They wanted to try something new or different. They wanted a challenge, AP or college credit.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 2. What did you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I enjoy meeting new students and teachers. Having a teacher at another school gives you another prospective on the topic. - I liked that we were able to talk to other students in different schools and learn the same subject and see what the other schools response to a question was. I like the chairs, air conditioning and the quiet environment that enables us to concentrate more. - How modern the class was and how we weren’t just reading out of a textbook. - I thought it was extremely interesting and kept my attention better than a normal classroom. I loved learning about World War I and World War II with Mr. Chamberlain. The content was very interesting. – I learned more about the holocaust than I would have. I liked the teacher, the class and the equipment. I liked being able to take a class that wouldn’t be available to me without DL. - I liked it because we did a lot of projects and I liked being on camera. I liked how the DL teacher on the screen was able to teach the class just as well as a classroom teacher. - The teacher was easily accessible - The aid was excellent. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as liked by DL students: Meeting and interacting with different students, teachers and schools. The interesting and comfortable learning environment. The opportunity to try something different. The subject or course material. The opportunity to work and learn with technology. The teacher or teaching assistant.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 3. What didn’t you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Sometimes the other room was loud but that was easily fixed by turning volume down. - Sometimes you wouldn’t hear the other students clearly. - Sometimes the other sites couldn’t hear us and the vacation schedules weren’t synchronized. That you didn’t get to actually meet the other students. - That the teacher seemed to pay more attention to his school. - It was hard sometimes for a teacher to help you while they weren’t in the room. Annoying students from other sites and some rude commentary. - A select few people from the other school were loud and obnoxious and there was nothing I could do about it. - When there was texting in the other school it would be very annoying over here. Class sometimes gets cut off during an interesting discussion because of the connection to other schools ending. - Some schools were not on the same break schedule as us, so we had a lot of time when class was not in session. We didn’t get papers back in a timely manner. – It was difficult to make up work. – I didn’t like it that the substitute had no idea what was going on with the video cameras and microphones. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Student Comments Most frequently noted as disliked by DL students: The teacher’s lack of organization or ineffective use of the equipment. Disruptive students or lack of discipline. Technical problems with audio or poor student/microphone positioning. Lack of interaction with or lack of attention from teacher or other students. Not dealing effectively with bell schedule or school calendar differences. * This year, the most common response to this question was an indication that the student had nothing that they disliked.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 4. What changes would you suggest for the Distance Learning classes? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Section C I wouldn’t change, its great unless the teacher is bad. The quality of the class is determined by the course and teacher. - I think its pretty effective and an easy transition, so I don’t think I'd charge anything, really. The times need to be scheduled better, we had to rush through work to accommodate the other school which had 15 minutes less class time. - Classes need to start within 5- 10 minutes of each other. The changes I suggest is trying to get the equipment updated so that we can send papers on the fax without problems. - Get new TV's and new computers with better audio transfer from computer to TV. I would suggest more use of email rather than fax machines. - More organization and that the students should meet each other. Require teachers to give out an email address. - Have more interaction between different schools. - Teachers should pay more attention to other sites. Make a strict no cell phone rule, no cell phones allowed in the room to prevent interference.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Student Comments Most frequently suggested changes: Deal more effectively with bell schedule and school calendar differences. Visits by teachers to remote classes and or combined class field trips. More balanced attention to classes by the teacher and better interaction. Technical improvements and better student/microphone/camera positioning. Teachers should use the system more effectively and be better organized. Better discipline, particularly re: loud talking, tapping and class disruptions. * This year, the most common response to this question was an indication that the student had no changes to suggest.

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ How informative and fun it was and how outgoing the other students from different schools were. - How interesting the classes are even though we watch the teacher on the television. - How much I actually learned while taking this course. How the kids in the other class easily become my classmates even though not in the same room. - How well it went even with technical difficulties. I was surprised about how easy it was to function and learn. I thought it would be more confusing. - That I actually, really enjoyed it. - The technology was easy to use and understand. It surprised me how good the communication was between the different schools. – How well this way of teaching works and how advanced the technology is. How connected you become with the kids at the other schools just by communicating over the screen. The amount of attention our teacher gave to both her class and ours even though we were in different places. Student Comments 5. What surprised you about Distance Learning? Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support That it is unexpectedly easy to become comfortable with the system. 25 .. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “ No”) Please describe what you wish your teacher could have done. ______________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wish our teacher had given much more attention to the guest sites and actually given us our grades and handbooks. I wish the teacher had given out an email address to communicate questions, missed lessons, or extra help. She had our school on mute a lot without knowing and would get angry when we couldn’t respond or ask questions. She also made it difficult to get work to her. Use more outside communication or visit us a couple of times. Listened more actively to us. - Made it easier to do make-up work. Treat everyone the same. I wish she would have given us something else to work on when we couldn’t have class. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Students most frequently wished that the teacher would: Make a greater effort to include receive site students in discussions, Pay equal attention to them and get to know them. Visit remote sites at least once and offer some extra help. Be more organized and prepared. Receive site students that feel the teacher did not make an effort to compensate

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “ Yes”) Please describe the efforts the teacher made to compensate. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ She visited the other sites and kept us busy even when there were technical complications She told us when to talk and when not to, very strict but I liked that because I wanted to pay attention. - The teacher gave out his email so students could more easily contact him. Our teacher made sure everyone was involved and interacting and kept everyone caught up even with conflicting schedules. She made herself available after school even though she had scheduling issues. Our teacher set up blackboard to communicate and review classes after school. She always made time for the other class to participate even if she couldn’t see them. The teacher set up blackboard. Students having trouble handing in assignments through DL were given multiple options such as email, fax, and Elmo. Section C

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Most frequently recognized DL teacher efforts Students that feel the teacher did make an effort to compensate Provided extra help and review sessions. Visited receive sites and got to know the students. Promoted interaction and participation. Used BlackBoard, made e-mail or phone contact available.
