6 The Stuarts and Parliament Conflict w/ parliament ▫Stemmed from absolute rule James I believed in divine right Puritans wanted to “purify” church and take power from church officials Charles I needed money ▫Parliament forced him to sign Petition of Right, limited his power ▫Dismissed parliament in 1629

7 The English Civil War Conflict between monarchy and parliament led to war ▫Charles brought back parliament to vote for more money after religious rebellion in Scotland Puritan group wanted to abolish appointment of bishops in Anglican church ▫King outraged, sent troops to arrest them ▫Led to beginning of English Civil War

12 James II and Glorious Revolution Charles II had no son, brother next in line ▫Catholic, people feared war James II very unpopular Group of nobles invited William and Mary (James’s daughter) to take over (both Protestant) ▫Called Glorious Revolution ▫Signed English Bill of Rights  Made England a constitutional monarchy
