Lacked: Adequate housing, Education Police protections Drains Garbage collection system (Collected in heaps on the street) Lived in dark, dirty shelters, with whole families crowding in one bedroom. Sickness was widespread. Epidemic (cholera). Life 17 in cities- 38 in rural areas.

5. Working Conditions To increase production, factory owners wanted to keep their machines running as many hours as possible. As a result: 14 hour work days, 6 days a week. Work did not change with the season, work remained the same week after week, year after year. Factories were not well lit or clean. Machine injured people. Coal mines- Damp conditions, constant breathing of coal. Women and child labor.
