2 Living and Working Condition The Industrial Revolution

3 Living Conditions Because England’s cities grew rapidly, they had development plans, sanitary codes, or building codes. Lacked: Adequate housing, Education Police protections Drains Garbage collection system (Collected in heaps on the street) Lived in dark, dirty shelters, with whole families crowding in one bedroom. Sickness was widespread. Epidemic (cholera). Life 17 in cities- 38 in rural areas.

5 Working Conditions To increase production, factory owners wanted to keep their machines running as many hours as possible. As a result: 14 hour work days, 6 days a week. Work did not change with the season, work remained the same week after week, year after year. Factories were not well lit or clean. Machine injured people. Coal mines- Damp conditions, constant breathing of coal. Women and child labor.

6 Primary Sources Pick up a copy of Joshep Hebergram’s interview and act out the scene. After, answer the questions on the following slide in your notebook with a partner.

7 Joseph Hebergram, 1832 At what age did Joseph Hebergram start working? How many hours a day did Joseph work? How were children disciplined in the factories? Were the mills relatively safe or dangerous? Explain Why did Joseph believe it was his duty to stay in the mill?

8 Diary Entry/Letter Assume the role of a factory worker (adult female/male, child female/male) and write a diary entry or letter describing your life during the industrial revolution. 1-page handwritten, 4 points. Must make 5 explicit refencences to the Industrial Revolution. (examples, diseases, working condition, living conditions, lack of x,y, and z), 5 points. Highlight or underline the 5 references. 1 point. Total of 5 points.
