1 Powers & Roles of the President Legislative Leader recommends/suggests new laws to Congress delivers the State of the Union Address writes a budget which Congress has to approve (checks & balances) Can approve or veto bills

2 Commander-in-Chief head of the armed forces (all military officers during war or in peacetime answer to the president) Has the final say in how a war is to be fought Can send in troops for 60-90 days without approval of Congress (WAR POWERS ACT, 1973)

3 Foreign Policy Leader appoints diplomats to represent the US in foreign countries meets with leaders from other countries (diplomacy) represents the US as head of state & chief diplomat negotiates treaties (approved by the Senate)

4 Head of State Adds diplomacy by greeting visiting kings and queens, prime ministers, and other foreign leaders Carries out ceremonial functions for Americans such as lighting the national Christmas tree and giving medals to the country’s heroes.

5 Chief Diplomat Directs the foreign policy of the US, making key decisions about how the US acts toward other countries in the world

6 Chief Executive Appoints Supreme Court justices, Cabinet Grant reprieves - postpones the carrying out of a sentence (usually spares someone from the death penalty) Grant pardons - forgives the person for the crime & eliminates the sentence; ex: President Carter pardoned all draft evaders during the Vietnam War Grant commutations reducing a person’s sentence

7 Other Roles party leader – for the political party that elected him Economic leader – many of the programs he implements involve taxes & tariffs which impact the economy

8 Presidential issue executive orders Powers direct government agencies to take certain actions; ex: FDR issued an executive order to place all Japanese Americans into internment camps during WWII
