2 Geographical Position Australia occupies the continent of Australia, which lies south-east of Asia and the island of Tasmania with a number of small islands. The total area is about 8 000 000 sq. km. It is washed by the Timor Sea in the north, by the Coral and Tasman Sea in the east, and by the Indian Ocean in the south and west.

11 The native people in Australia were the Aborigines. Some people think the Aborigines were the first people in the world! In the past the Aborigines didn’t live in one place. They travelled around the Australian continent to find food and water and they hunted with boomerangs.

12 The first British people went to Australia about 3 hundred years ago. Many other British immigrants followed them. After 1950 people from other parts of the world went to live in Australia too. Now English is the official language of all Australians – but they speak it with an Australian accent. Nowadays the population is 22.8 million people.

13  The largest rivers in Australia are the Darling and the Murray.  In the middle part of Australia there are salt lakes, such as Lake Eyre and Torrance.

14  Australia is the most droughty continent on the Earth. About one half of its territory is occupied by deserts and semideserts.

15 The main part of Australia lies in tropics. Southwestern parts of the country are situated in subtropics. December, January and February are summer months in Australia. The average summer temperature there is from 29 to 30 degrees above zero. Winter comes in June, July and August. Then the average temperature is from 12 to 20 degrees above zero.
