4. Writing with Adverbs n A word that describes a verb is an ADVERB. Some adverbs answer the question “how?” n The dog barked LOUDLY. n The tiger waits PATIENTLY. n The girl sits QUIETLY.

5. Adverbs that tell Where and When. n Some adverbs answer the question “Where?” n It has beautiful pictures INSIDE. n Some adverbs answer the question “When?” n Let’s travel to the beach TODAY.

6. Adverbs That Compare n Comparing two actions: – If the adverb ends in -ly, use more. – The boy worked more steadily than me. – Other adverbs, use the ending -er. – The cow ran faster than the snail.

7. Adverbs That Compare n Comparing three or more actions. – If the adverb ends in -ly, use most. – The woman sang most beautifully of all. – Other adverbs, use the ending -est. – The ant worked the hardest of all the insects.

8. Using Words That Mean “NO.” n Careful speakers do not use two words that mean no (not, none, nobody, never, etc…) in the same sentence. n Wrong: I don’t know no one named Sue. n Correct: I don’t know anyone named Sue.
