Care and Storage of Garments Facilitator: Jasmina S

Care of the garments during wear Have sufficient time for dressing up. Open the fasteners before putting on the garments. In humid weather- dust the body with talcum powder. While putting on the stockings or the socks, check that the finger nails and toe nails are smooth.

Care of the garments during wear Heavy articles should not be carried in the pockets of shirts and jackets. Lipstick should be applied after dressing up. Perfume should not be applied directly on clothes. Select and use jewellery care fully. Check the place of sitting. Take care while getting in and out of cars and buses.

Care of the garments during wear Avoid wearing expensive and delicate clothes on a rainy day. Remove all pins. Jewellery, and belts before taking out clothes. Unfasten the fasteners before taking off the garments. Wash and wipe your hands after eating and drinking.

Care of clothing after wear 1.Brushing-Remove the dust and lint accumulated with a brush. 2.Hanging- Garments should be hung to a hanger unless they need laundering or dry cleaning. 3.Airing- Garments should be aired for few hours in a well ventilated place. 4.Mending-Clothes should be checked for any repair and should be done immediately. 5.Storing- Store the clothes in a wardrobe that are ready for next wear. Do not clutter used and unused garments.

Laundering of cotton Laundering is essential to remove the dust, dirt, perspiration, grease and body odour from the garments. Clothes that need laundering should be aired and dried properly before storing them in the laundry basket. Laundering of clothes should be done keeping in view the properties that can affect its care at different stages of laundering. Desirable properties Undesirable properties

Washing of cotton garments 1.Preparation for washing i.Mending and stain removal- Mend the worn out parts and ripped seams. Stains should also be removed. ii.Sorting- Cotton garments should be separated according to the sturdiness from other garments. iii.Steeping- It means soaking the garments in detergent solution. 2.Washing-Method of washing depends upon the type of garment, its texture, colour and the type of dirt present. 3.Rinsing- Clothes should be rinsed several times in fresh water to remove the traces of dirt and detergent.

4.Bleaching- White cotton garments are bleached to remove any stains that have not been removed during washing. Sunlight is an effective bleach for cottons other wise sodium hypo chloride solution can also be used. 5.Stiffening and blueing- Starch solution is made up to the required strength and blue is squeezed carefully. 6.Drying- Sun drying not only dries the garments quickly but also disinfects and bleaches them. 7.Ironing- Finishing of cotton clothes is done based on the type of fabric (woven fabric, knitted garment or starched garment)

8.Folding and Storing- Garments should be completely dried before folding. 9.Seasonal storage- Cotton garments that are to be stored till the next season should not be ironed and starched. But should be protected from dust, insects and mildew. Washing of special cotton fabrics Organdie, velveteen and flannelette are other fabrics which differ from ordinary cotton fabrics in yarn type, weave and finish applied. So they require different type of care during laundering.

Laundering of woolen garments Woollens need particular attention during laundering due to its peculiar properties of elasticity, resiliency and tendency to felt. Properties of wool should be considered before laundering. Steps in laundering woollens 1.Preparation for washing- i.Shaking and brushing- Shake the garment thoroughly and brush it to remove loose dirt. ii.Mending and stain removal- Woollen knitwear are more prone to holes which should be mended. Weak acids should be used for stain removal. iii.Outlining the garment on paper- Woollen knitwear are liable to felt or stretch out of shape during winter. So, it is better to mark the outline of to garment before wetting it.

iv.Steeping- Steeping is not essential for woollens. But for dirty clothes 10-15 minutes of steeping is sufficient. 2.Washing- i.Preparation of wash solution- A neutral or reethanut powder should be dissolved in luke warm water to prepare the wash solution. ii.Washing- Woollen garments should be washed by kneading and squeezing method. Very heavy garments can be washed by suction washing.

3.Rinsing- After washing clothes are squeezed out several times in luke warm water. To neutralize any alkali left in the garment use vinegar in the last rinse for coloured woollens and citric acid for white woollens. 4.Removing excess water- Garments should be squeezed well by hands and then wrapped in a towel and pressed to remove excess moisture.

5.Drying- The garment should be placed on the outline drawn on the paper and pulled to the original shape. It should be dried in shade on a flat surface. 6.Finishing- Woolens are finished by ironing. These should be ironed when fully dry, placing damp cloth over the surface of the garment.

7.Folding and storing- Garments should be aired after ironing. They should be folded and put on hangers or arranged at the shelf of a closet. 8.Seasonal storage- If woolens are to be stored for next season they should be packed in plastic bags and sealed with cellophane tape. To protect woollens from moths, naphthalene balls can be placed in the storage tank or closet.

Laundering of Silk garments Silk is a delicate fabric and needs careful washing to maintain its elegance and sheen. Avoid heat, friction and strong alkali on silk. Keeping in view the properties of silk, the process of washing silk is as follows- 1.Pre-preparation for washing- i.Mending and stain removal- Ripped seams and other types of repair should be done before washing. Acidic reagents in diluted form are more safe on silk. ii.Sorting- White, colour-fast and non-colour fast cloths should be separated. iii.Steeping- Steeping is not very essential for silk as they leave the dirt easily. Very dirty cloths can be steeped in warm water with little borax.

2. Washing Preparation of wash solution- Silk should be washed in luke warm water. Wash solution should be prepared by dissolving neutral detergents such as soap flakes or reethanut solution. Washing-Kneading and squeezing method should be followed with sufficient wash solution. Suction washing should be used to wash heavy garments.

3. Rinsing- Rinsing should be done two to three times in warm water to remove dirt and detergent from the garments. Final rinse should be done in cold water with little vinegar or lime juice added to it. 4. Stiffing the silk- Some soft silk require stiffness for which little gum water is added in the final rinse. 5. Drying- Silk should be dried evenly in shade on the wrong side. 6. Finishing- Ironing is done on silk gently with moderately hot iron when it is evenly damp as uneven dampness will result in water marks.

7. Folding and storing- Garments should be aired after ironing. These should be folded to hanger width size and hanged in damp proof closets. 8. Seasonal storage- Silk should not be starched if they have to stored for a longer time. Garments should be packed in polythene bags. Moth repellents can be kept in storage tanks.

A. Storage for in-season clothing Note:In-season clothes are those worn at the present time. Avoid overcrowding closets and drawers Group similar items together in closets and drawers. Examples:Socks, underwear, shirts, pants, jackets. Use drawer dividers, silverware trays, and shoe boxes to organize drawer space. Double closet space by hanging one rod above another Hang similar lengths together

Accessories, storage Example:Gloves, scarves, caps Mount small hook or tie rack on closet door or walls to hold small items. Example:Ties, belts, scarves, necklaces Store small items in storage bags pockets. Example:Socks, belts,(rolled up), shoe polish supplies, care labels, extra buttons and yarns that come attached to garments. Store seldom-worn items in boxes under the bed or on top shelf of closet
