2. I M M I G R A T I O N Objectives:
To know the 3 stages of immigration to Britain in the 20th century.
To begin to understand some of the reasons why people came to the UK.

4. As we go through the slides you need to come up with some questions which would be answered by the information.

5. Immigration from 1939-75 There were 3 main waves of immigration.
The first wave took place because of the Second World War and the events leading up to it – prisoners of war, Jews, Poles and other Europeans escaping persecution and Irish who formed the largest group.

6. Second wave
This took place once the war was over. Britain urgently needed a large number of workers to help rebuild war-damaged cities, to run the London Transport system and to work in the new NHS. Recruitment offices were set up in Ireland, in refugee camps and in the West Indies.
Nearly a million Irish workers lived in Britain and around 250,000 Caribbean immigrants arrived between 1955 and 1962.
Caribbean immigration was boosted due to the USA’s restrictions (1952) and London Transport schemes (1956).

7. 1948
British Nationalities Act
The appeal for new workers was aimed at white Europeans. However, the British Nationalities Act of 1948 gave British citizenship (and passports) to millions of citizens from the Empire. This gave them the right to enter Britain and stay for as long as they liked.

8. SS Empire Windrush
The steamship Empire Windrush brought the first large group of migrant workers from the Caribbean to Britain in This event has acquired a huge symbolic significance as the first step towards today’s multicultural society

9. The Third Wave The third wave came in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Immigration was of mainly Asian people from India and Pakistan
Increasingly those coming to Britain were women and children joining family members already in the country.
The steady stream of Asian migrants to Britain was boosted by two events affecting Asians in Kenya and Uganda in 1967 and
