Definition Poetry is an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an emotional response. Poetry has been known to employ meter and rhyme, but this is by no means necessary. Poetry is an ancient form that has gone through numerous and drastic reinvention over time. The very nature of poetry as an authentic and individual mode of expression makes it nearly impossible to define.

What Is Poetry? ~ Poem A poem can be a brief, shining moment in which you capture a kernel of something beautiful for the first time. It can be way for you to explore your deepest, private thoughts and make language come alive. Writing poetry can be a great pleasure and a great challenge. The best way to begin thinking about writing poetry is to read the poetry of others.

Characteristics Of Poetry Theme: The central meaning of the poem. Poets write to try to make sense of life and to convey their thoughts about nature, birth, love, death, families, growing up, and so on. Poets also create pictures of, and make comments on, social concerns like poverty, the environment, and technology. They tell stories and put abstract feelings into words.

Images: The pictures the poet creates through language. Poets are astute observers; they see ordinary people, events, and objects in a fresh and original way. Poets are sensitive to the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of things around them. They see priceless moments and details and the "show" them to the reader through carefully crafted words

Diction- The selection of specific words. Poets choose words carefully and arrange them in the best order: they make every word count. Poets use rhyme and rhythm, alliteration and assonance, similes and metaphors, and other poetic techniques to capture the essence of what they mean.

Form The arrangement of words, lines, verses, rhymes, and other features. There are different kinds of poems, each governed by its own set of rules for composition.
