1. Cold War Allegory Due this Week! Make sure it is at a 4 th grade reading level. Keep it simple! Use all the terms (don’t name them the same) listed in the assignment! The following slides will help you understand a little more about each event! Take out your Terms!

Yalta Conference Meeting between the United States, the Soviet Union and Great Britain. –Provide and promote peace –To provide emergency relief from the war The United States and the Soviet Union secretly wanted two different things! The U.S. wanted a democratic world led by the U.S. The Soviet Union wanted a strong communist state and protection from western democracy.

3. CONTAINMENT A United States policy directed at blocking Soviet influence and preventing the expansionism of communism.

4. Truman Doctrine The United States gave support to any country that resisted the idea of communism. The United States gave Greece and Turkey 400 million dollars to help their governments keep democracy and freedom.

5. Berlin Blockade The Soviet Union cut off all access to West Berlin and the U.S. could not get food and supplies into the democratic peoples of West Berlin. This was an attempt to starve the people of West Berlin so they would be forced to accept communism and Soviet expansionism. The U.S. began an eleven month campaign of airlifting supplies and food to the people of West Berlin. (Berlin Airlift)

6. N.A.T.O. and the Warsaw Pact NATO – North Atlantic Treaty Organization – an alliance of democratic nations in Western Europe who allied themselves with the United States and Canada. Warsaw Pact - Alliance between Poland, Soviet Union, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania.

7. ARMS RACE Both superpowers were developing stronger and stronger weapons. In January 1950, Truman authorized a thermonuclear weapon ( Hydrogen Bomb) that was 1000 times more powerful than the A-bomb.

8. Brinkmanship The willingness to go to the brink, or edge of war. Both superpowers were developing many weapons that would lead them to the brink of war.

9. Space Race In the 1950’s both superpowers competed for influence in SPACE. They both began to develop technology that could be used to explore and control space. It all started with : -1957 – First satellite launched into to space – SOVIET UNION – “SPUTNIK”

10. U-2 Incident In May of 1960, the Soviet Union shot down a U.S. U-2 spy plane. The pilot Francis Gary Powers was captured. This brought mistrust and tensions between the two superpowers to a new height.
