1 3.3 Norms and Values Norms: rules defining appropriate and inappropriate behavior. Norms help guide social behavior. Cultural Etiquette: In Saudi Arabia it is inappropriate to sit with the soles of your shoes showing.

2 Folkways: Norms that lack moral significance. -Talking loudly in quiet places.  Mores: Norms that have moral dimensions and that should be followed by members of a society. -Able bodied men should work for a living. Taboo: a rule of behavior, the violation of which calls for strong punishment. -Incest

3 Law: A norm that is formally defined and enforced by officials. -folkways and mores emerge slowly and are often unconsciously created, while laws are consciously created and enforced. Example: Smoking Silly Laws Still On The Books: - It is illegal to step out of a plane in flight in Maine. -It is illegal to play cards on trains in New York. -It is illegal to whistle underwater in Vermont.

4 Enforcing the Rules Sanctions: Rewards and punishments used to encourage people to follow norms. Can be formal/informal Values – The Basis for Norms Values: Broad ideas about what is good or desirable shared by people in a society. What are Basic Values in The US?
