Stigma is characteristics that discredit people
We see stigmas attached to a variety of people
People who are blind
People who are deaf
People with mental handicaps
People with different types of disease (AIDS)

4. Deviance Deviance- Any violation of rules or norms
Crime- the violation of norms written into law
Social Control- A groups formal and informal means of enforcing its norms

Social Order- a groups usual and customary social arrangements, on which its members depend and on which they base their lives

Positive Sanctions are used to reward people for conforming to norms.

8. Shaming is used in small communities and to keep children in line.
As the society gets larger, shaming is not as effective
Degradation Ceremony is an attempt to remake the self by stripping away an individual’s self identity.
