2 The Generals: Union: General William Rosecrans Confederacy: General Braxton Bragg “The Plan” Both generals had plans of attack, but Bragg struck first. Jan.1 False reports of Rosecrans retreat kept Bragg in place. Jan. 2: Bragg sends in General Breckinridge-nearly broke threw Union lines-Battle a tactical draw Union reinforcements showed up Jan. 3 Bragg retreats giving Union a valuable victory Stones River runs red for days. Casualty rate of 29%, second only to Gettysburg. Both armies spend months regaining strength.

3 Grant vs Pemberton  April 16, 1863 Grant crosses the river and surprises the Rebels  Pemberton and his men are trapped in Vicksburg’s trenches  Siege lasted 47 days  Casualties: 9,000 Confederate and 10,000 Union-only 20 Vicksburg citizens lost in siege  July 4, 1863 Pemberton surrenders Union had split the South in two! The tide of the Civil War had turned!!!
