Bell Work 1.What scientist is known as the father of genetics. 2.What plant did he use for his research? 3.Why did he use this plant type? 4.What is a hybrid plant?
2
Vocabulary Genes: section on a chromosome that has genetic information for one trait. Alleles: different forms of a gene.
3
Vocabulary - Recessive Alleles Alleles that are written with lowercase letters, and are only expressed when paired with another recessive allele – Ex) Having blue eyes is recessive and having brown eyes is dominant. Having blue eyes allele : b Having brown eyes allele: B
4
Vocabulary - Dominant Alleles Alleles that are written with capital letters, and are always expressed or seen even if they are paired with another allele – Ex) Having a Widow’s Peak is dominant over not having a Widow’s Peak. Having a Widows Peak Allele : W Not Having a Widows Peak Allele: w
5
Vocabulary - Genotype The type of alleles you have in your genes for a particular trait There are 3 different combinations of Genotypes: 1) 2 recessive alleles (ww) = Homozygous Recessive 2) 2 dominant alleles (WW) = Homozygous Dominant 3) One dominant and one recessive allele (Ww) = Heterozygous The prefix “Hetero” means different = Different alleles! ex) Heterosexual = you are attracted to individuals of the opposite sex The prefix “Homo” means the same = Same alleles! ex) Homosexual = you are attracted to individuals of the same sex
6
Vocabulary - Phenotype The physical trait that is expressed from the genotype W = Widows Peak w = straight hairline Ex) Genotype = WW Phenotype = Ex) Genotype = Ww Phenotype = Ex) Genotype = ww Phenotype =
