Cold War It was "cold" because there was no large-scale fighting directly between the two sides.

Where?

Check out the worksheet: Note how the former German Nazi territory is divided up at the Yalta Conference (1945) France, Britain, the U.S. and the Soviet Union each taking their ‘portion’ to occupy. The Soviet Union gets a large chunk of Eastern Europe, even Eastern Germany.

Proxy Wars During the Cold War period, many wars took place around the world. Wars instigated by the superpowers which did not necessarily involve themselves (i.e. providing arms, etc). Korean War, Suez Crisis, Vietnam War, Loatian Civil War, Cuban Missile Crisis, Afghan-Soviet, and the list goes on… Even the Pro-Russian conflict in Ukraine could be considered a proxy war by extension.

When? Shortly after WWII (which ended in 1945) when the Soviet Union began consolidating the communist “Eastern Bloc” countries, while the U.S. drew up it’s policy of containment. NATO was created in 1949 Warsaw Pact was created in 1955 In 1991, so roughly 4 decades later, the Soviet Union collapsed – the Communist party was officially banned and dissolved.

Who? Out of WWII emerged two ‘superpowers’: Soviet Union (USSR) and the United States It means that they were economically, militarily and technologically stronger than other nations in the world. But tensions would increase between the two superpowers – threatening world peace again. Their conflicting ideologies would form the basis of the ‘Cold War’

What about Canada? Canada was a ‘middle power’ because it was no match to the U.S. or USSR, but strategically important to the U.S. in terms of ‘continental defence’.

Ideologically Different United States (RIGHT WING)Soviet Union (LEFT WING)  Promoted American-style democracy, free elections, free market economy.  Freedom of Speech  Class Division  Work for individual earning  Emphasis on the individual and private property rights  Aimed to implement communism  The communist regime in Russia was imposed on the people by Stalin (dictator)  No Class Division  Work/produce for the good of the state  Emphasis on the general good and NO PRIVATE PROPERTY (all public ownership – managed by the state).

Why? Two ideologies of government and their attempts to dominate the world led to the polarization of the Soviets (Reds) and the West. Just as alliances quickly formed for the WWI and WWII, so they did as the U.S. and the Soviet Union locked down for a cold war.

What? COLD WAR refers to the power struggle, which was being fought by every means short of warfare. Both sides feared nuclear war … So instead of waging a “hot” war with troops and weapons

The COLD WAR was fought with: Threats and scare tactics of an arms race: each side racing to stockpile larger, more destructive weapons – nuclear weapons, propaganda, espionage (spying/intelligence), economic and political pressures, limited military aggression, but collective security (alliances – like NATO, Warsaw Pact, NORAD) Also a space race over who could get to the moon faster! And don’t forget the proxy wars...
