Types of Maps 1. Political- Shows boundaries of countries, states, and counties (most common) 2. Topographic- A lot of detail showing natural and man-made features 3. Physical- Close to the same as political but purpose is to show landforms (deserts, mountains, plains)

Types of Maps Cont. 1.Climate- Shows climatic zones of the world 2. Resource- Shows where certain natural resources are found 3. Road- think “Mapquest” 4. Thematic- Shows themes within a certain region($, political parties, etc.)

Earth Representation 1.Globe- 3-D 2. Conic- Flattened globe, cuts the world in half 3. Robinson- Most widely used, shows entire world at once, least accurate

Latitude and Longitude Coordinates: Latitude comes first and then Longitude Ex: 8N 30E (Latitude 8 North, Longitude 30 E) Equator: Imaginary line at 0 degrees latitude, splits into N and S hemispheres Prime Meridian: 0 degrees longitude, divides into E and W hemispheres Artic Circle: invisible circle of latitude where North cant see over horizon in winter solstice (longest night of the year)

Location Absolute- Exact latitude and longitude coordinates Relative- Using landmarks to describe where something is located
