5 Video Workshop Safety: Chemistry Laboratory Play

6 Discussion What is an acceptable safety goal for your chemistry laboratory? For instance, would a 90% safety ratio be acceptable? I need to set a goal for the percent of my students that will avoid a serious accident during my teaching career. What do you think is an acceptable or realistic percentage? Here’s some math as it applies to my schedule:

7 Discussion On average, I have had 5 chemistry classes per day. I have an average of 24 students per class. When I retire, I will have taught chemistry for 20 years. So, the total number of students taught in a career would be: 5 x 24 x 20 = 2400 students What do you think would be an acceptable safety goal for my career, as a percent of student that would leave my class at the end of the year without being injured? Discuss this in your SLC. In my chemistry-teaching career, if just 1 student got seriously injured in my lab, my safety percentage would be: 2399 / 2400 = 99.967 % That is very good unless… … you are that one student who was seriously injured! Let’s translate your answers into the actual number of students that would be seriously hurt (eye damage, burns, etc.) in my lab. For example, if you said an acceptable safety goal would be 95%: 1.00 –.95 = 0.05 x 2400 = 120 students seriously injured Is this an acceptable safety goal? What is the only acceptable safety goal? 100%.

8 Discussion Let’s come up with some rules that must be followed when we’re conducting laboratory investigations in this classroom? In your SLC, please write down five safety rules and be prepared to share with the class.

9 Activity Everyone get a copy of the Laboratory Classroom Scavenger Hunt form. You have 10 minutes to walk around the room with the members of your SLC and fill in the handout about the safety equipment in the lab. After 10 minutes, return to your seats. Which groups found at least 4 things on their hunt? Which groups found at least 7 things on their hunt? Any volunteers to discuss one piece of equipment and show us where it is located in the lab?

10 Wrap Up Please turn in your SLC group’s safety rules. Everyone: please turn in your scavenger hunt forms.

11 Homework Flinn Scientific's Student Safety Contract: Read, sign, get parents signature, and return the contract by Thursday. You will get back the contract itself to put into your chemistry notebook.
