3 What Is Multilateration
Triangulation System Uses Aircraft Transponder Multiple Ground Receivers Central Computer Calculates & Displays Aircraft Position To Less Than 20 Ft. Includes Aircraft Identification Multilateration uses transponder replies to provide position and identification data using three steer-able beams to process transponder replies.

4 ASDE-X System Overview
Fusion Platform/ Display Processor Tower Display Radar Sensor ASR/SSR Sensor Multilateration Sensor The Airport Surface Detection Equipment – Model X (ASDE-X) is a multi-sensor data fusion surveillance system. The goal of ASDE-X is to increase situational awareness of air traffic controllers. ASDE-X is composed of 5 subsystems: a surface movement radar, multilateration system, a remote monitoring system, a multi-sensor data processor, and a display processor. And along with a series of multilateration sensors located around the airport complex, these will combine to produce a surface radar presentation totally void of blind spots.

5 ATC Tower Display Characteristics (Continued)
The ATCT will have a display that will track all transponder equipped aircraft and vehicles and will provide a highly accurate presentation of all movements on the airport.

10 ADS-B May Enable a Wide Range of Operational Capabilities
Air-to-Air • Improved Separation Standards • Enhanced See and Avoid • Enhanced Operations for En Route Airport Surface Improved Pilot Situational Awareness Enhanced Controller Management of Surface Traffic Reduced Potential for Runway Incursion / Ground Collision There are nine operational enhancements that define and bound the scope of the SF-21 program as determined by RTCA--they can be roughly divided into 4 categories: air-to-air, air-to-ground, ground-to-ground, and ground-to-air. Please note that these categories are not mutually exclusive. Air-to-air and ground-to-ground applications are generally oriented to capacity and efficiency benefits--the focus of the Ohio valley activities. The air-to-ground and ground-to-air applications are generally oriented to safety benefits--the focus of the Capstone activities. These nine enhancements are thoroughly described in the SF-21 Master Plan. 17 But to ensure the accuracy of the surface maps that the ADS-B database will incorporate, the Safe Flight 21 office has commissioned the GPS survey of all the major airports in the nation. The accuracy of a pilot’s position on the surface of the airport based upon his moving map will be = or < 10 feet. By the end of FY-04, 130 airports will have been surveyed.

18 The objective of the RSP is simply to keep acft and vehicles off of the runway when they are in use by a landing or a takeoff. It is surprising how many violations involve NOT seeing the hold sign and marking. This laser light enhancement is being tested in Anchorage.

19 GROUND MARKER BEACON A small transmitter with a narrow and very select range is tied into the the airport lighting system. The announcement notifies the pilot of his position and that he is approaching a runway.

20 Here is another lost cost system that does not require any special acft equipage and is being tested in California. As an ILS-equipped acft passes through a small zone, they receive a audible message over their marker beacon system.
