3 LEARNING TARGET: ST4. I CAN CREATE AN ORGANIZED NOTEBOOK FOR USE IN SCIENCE. Why do we use notebooks ? It’s a DAILY record of your learning We OFTEN use resources we put in our notebooks. Open notebook quizzes Rubrics for completing your assignments Keeping a neat and organized notebook is a good SKILL for you to learn to use in all your classes You don’t lose things You become a responsible and serious student

4 NOTEBOOK SET-UP WORKSHOP 30 MINS ONE partner goes through the buffet line to pick up pages for both people. Each table needs their NUMBERED supply box. Follow the directions to set up your notebook. You may work with your table partner quietly. I will be circulating to help you with questions.

5 PAGE 1 “CORNELL NOTES” This is how we take notes in science. The LEFT column is where you write questions, main ideas, important words. The RIGHT column is where you write your notes, responses, and answers. The last section at the BOTTOM is your summary section. EVERY TIME we work you are responsible for a summary. How to write a five sentence summary (see page 4)

6 PAGE 2 “LAB EXPECTATIONS” For each of the 5 five Lab Rules draw a picture that you think describes the rule. Why is it important to be safe in the lab?

7 PAGE 3 “CLASS EXPECTATIONS” For each of the 4 classroom expectations, write a reason why the expectation is important. Do you think these are fair? Would you add any others?

8 PAGE 4 “SUMMARY RUBRIC” We will build up to 5 sentences in our summaries.

9 PAGE 5 “CLAIM, EVIDENCE AND REASONING” You will use CER in labs, projects and assignments where you collect or interpret information. This is known as a “scientific explanation” Who has written these before?

10 PAGE 6 “WEEKLY READER” Show magazines and weekly reader expectations page. Who has read these before?

11 PAGE 7-8 “LEFT SIDE/RIGHT SIDE” This is how your notebook will be set up each day. Read over the information from “left and right sides”

12 PAGE 9-10 “LS/RS PRACTICE” PAGE 9: set it up with a Cornell note page label each section of the page write what you will do in each section of the page. (see page 1) PAGE 10: write down what types of things might go on the left side. Why do you think the left side is important to do?

13 PAGE 11 “SNB GRADING SHEET” This is how your notebook will be graded. Things to keep in mind 1.Messy writing that can’t be read will lower your score. 2.Sloppy or un-thoughtful output pages will lower your score. 3.NOT writing ALL required items on Cornell notes will lower your score.

14 WRAP UP 5 minutes: LT review: “I can create an organized notebook for use in science.” Choose one to two pages you interacted with today. Share your pages with your table partner, then switch. Tell your partner THREE things you liked about their pages.

15 FOR NEW STUDENTS: If you missed the notebook set up or activities, please do this: 1. Pick up a notebook direction packet by the SNB buffet line or look on Lau’s web-site. 2. Do your set-up for homework or come in after school for help. ** You need to have your notebook completed by the end of the week. It is worth 20 pts.
