Mara Stultz 1 st grade

Portfolio page 1 1, 2, & 3: The rule, the rational, and how I will teach the rule

Rule One: Be kind Rational: Being kind to one another leaves for a kind environment which makes students feel welcome in the classroom to learn. How I will teach the rule: Talk to the students about different situations about students being kind vs. not being kind. Have groups of 5 (depending on the classroom size) come up with two different skits. One of the skits demonstrating an unkind act and the other demonstrating a kind act.

Rule Two: We raise our hand Rational: When students raise their hand to speak it teaches self control and it makes teaching much easier and effective. How I will teach the rule: I will make it known at the beginning of the year, always remind the students of the rule, and keep the rule consistent.

Rule Three: Follow directions Rational: Following directions means the student should be on the same page as you and every student. They understand what is going on and the lesson is flowing. How I will teach the rule: I will make the rule known by reminding the students to stay on task. I will also use proximity control, marking, and praising a nearby student.

Rule Four: Always do your best! Rational: Students should always do their best so we can see the improvements that are made in their performance. Also so we can praise their hard work and make them feel good about it so they continue to do their best. How I will teach the rule: Remind students to do their best in the most positive way. Praise them when they have done good work.

Rational for classroom layout: 1. The teacher’s desk is located towards the back of the classroom so that the teacher can monitor the students at her desk. 2. The pencil sharpener is located at the back of the room so that the students don’t make a disturbance in the front of the classroom. 3. The projector is on the ceiling to save classroom space. 4. The students sit at a circular table as their desks. They are teams and the tables are color coded so they can locate their spot. 5. The problem student is close to my desk and towards the back so they don’t feel the urge to put on a show in the front. 6. The ESOl student is in the front, closer to my desk and close to an excelling student to help them along if they ever need it.

Portfolio Page 3: rewards & consequences

Rewards Every student has a calendar book. Every day, the students receive stars that stick onto the calendar. Depending on their behavior that day they will get one, two, or none. At the end of each week if they have five or more stars they are awarded with a special toy, candy, or prize from the “fun box”.

Consequences If a student misbehaves I will have a private discussion about the problem with the student and if the student continues with the problem I will not give them a star for the day. However, I don’t want the student to feel discouraged the whole week because they know they wont get a prize at the end of the week. During our private discussion I will explain to the student that they will need to be on their top behavior the following day and they could possibly get one or two stars so they are still able to receive a prize.

Portfolio Page 4: Routines & procedures How my students will handle the following situations

Passing out papersLeaving for the restroom Since it is 1 st grade, I or an assistant teacher will pass out the papers to the students to conserve teaching time. Should only take about 2 or 3 minutes. The restroom will most likely be in the classroom but they will need to notify the teacher or assistant teacher when they need to use the bathroom. The door will have a sign on it that they will flip to the green side when it is unoccupied and when it is occupied to the red side. I also have a washing hands policy.

Sharpening pencilsGetting supplies and books I will remind the students to sharpen their pencils at the beginning of class if they need. If they need to sharpen it at another point during class if they raise their hand I will allow them to sharpen it. If it is not a convenient time to sharpen I will lend them a pencil. I will have the supplies already in little baskets for them on top of the supplies shelf. I will say something along the lines of “can the person with the shortest hair get the basket of supplies today please”. Something that students will find more enjoyable than making it seem like a chore.

Dismissing classTurning in work We walk together as a class single file to the dismissal routes the school has set up. Myself or the assistant teacher will pick up the papers they stack up in the middle of their table.

Taking attendance I will take attendance one by one as they walk through the door to the classroom. I will silently double check my attendance again at a point where the students are working.
