3 Creating a Positive Climate for Success with School-wide PBIS

4 If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach. If a child doesn’t know how to swim, we teach. If a child doesn’t know how to multiply, we teach. If a child doesn’t know how to drive, we teach. If a child doesn’t know how to behave, we… teach? punish? Why can’t we finish the last sentence as automatically as we do the others? (Herner, 1998)

5 What is School-wide Positive Behavior Support? The application of evidence-based strategies and systems to assist schools to increase academic performance increase safety decrease problem behavior and establish positive school cultures

6 PBIS Big Ideas Positive Behavior Support is a process for teaching children appropriate behavior and providing the supports necessary to sustain that behavior. PBIS is not a curriculum - it is a framework for systems to identify needs, develop strategies, and evaluate practice toward success

9 Fourth Grade Consequences 1.Warning with explanation 2.Stamp/sticker in Agenda Book 3.Lose Recess or a portion of recess 4.Contact parent through behavior referral system * Certain actions warrant immediate administrative involvement such as fighting, using inappropriate language, harassment, threats, and possession of contraband or weapons.

10 RUE Hawk Heroes Soar to Success Positive Behaviors are Celebrated with: –Tickets –Public recognition –morning announcements –student spotlight of the month –earned rewards –assemblies

11 Data Binders Means of tracking student progress Form of communication with parents There is a section for Math, ELA ( Reading and writing), Science and Social Studies. Please sign the Binder Check sheet in the front of the binder when it comes home with your child.

12 Homework Expectations Read 20 minutes: Monday-Friday Ready, Set, Read: Students write responses to ELA teachers as they finish a book Math: Monday-Thursday Occasionally Science & Social Studies Word Study: Once a week Homework shouldn’t take more than a total of 40 minutes in 4 th grade

13 Agenda Book Expectations Students should copy their homework daily Parent signature everyday If your child had trouble with our 3 R’s (Respectful, Responsible, Ready) there will be a label in your child’s assignment book

14 4th grade events Wax Museum is tentatively scheduled for the Spring. ( More information will follow) Possible Field Trips: –Fall-Science Center –Spring-Annapolis

16 Miscellaneous Reminders Volunteer trainings must take place 7 school days prior to volunteering or chaperoning Feel free to celebrate your child’s birthday with pencils or erasers. ( Please refrain from sending food items due to possible food allergies)

17 Planned Absences Students may collect their missed assignments from teachers on the day they return to school. Students will have the same amount of days they were absent to make up the work. If the student misses an assessment, the teacher will schedule a time for the assessment based on the progress of the missed work.

18 STEM Curriculum  Cluster 1 – Multiplication and Division  Cluster 2 – Addition and Subtraction with Multiple Digits H.O.T. Cards Contract Folders  Science units will be integrated with Math throughout the year
