3 Creating a Positive Climate for Success with School-wide PBIS

4 If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach. If a child doesn’t know how to swim, we teach. If a child doesn’t know how to multiply, we teach. If a child doesn’t know how to drive, we teach. If a child doesn’t know how to behave, we… teach? punish? Why can’t we finish the last sentence as automatically as we do the others? (Herner, 1998)

5 What is School-wide Positive Behavior Support? The application of evidence-based strategies and systems to assist schools to increase academic performance increase safety decrease problem behavior and establish positive school cultures

6 PBIS Big Ideas Positive Behavior Support is a process for teaching children appropriate behavior and providing the supports necessary to sustain that behavior. PBIS is not a curriculum - it is a framework for systems to identify needs, develop strategies, and evaluate practice toward success

9 Consistent Consequences 1.General reminder will be given about appropriate behavior. 2.Individual reminder/redirection will be given about appropriate behavior. 3.Student receives a Level One discipline form and teacher consequences. Your child will have a sticker in their assignment book. 4.Chronic behavior will result in a support room or office referral. * Certain actions warrant immediate administrative involvement such as fighting, using inappropriate language, harassment, threats, and possession of contraband or weapons.

12 Data Binders Means of tracking student progress Form of communication with parents There is a section for Math, Writing, and Reading. Please sign the Binder Check sheet in the front of the binder when it comes home with your child.

13 Homework Policy Read 20 minutes: Monday-Friday Strive for 25/Ready Set Read: Students write letters to ELA teachers as they finish a book Math: Monday-Thursday Occasionally Science & Social Studies Homework shouldn’t take longer than 40 minutes in 4 th grade

14 Assignment Book Expectations Students should copy their homework daily Parent signature everyday If your child had trouble with our 3 R’s (Respectful, Responsible, Ready) there will be a label in your child’s assignment book

17 Miscellaneous Reminders Volunteer trainings must take place 7 school days prior to volunteering or chaperoning Feel free to celebrate your child’s birthday with pencils or erasers. Please sign up for the PTO school directory to arrange out of school activities If a work request is made in preparation for vacations we will send home some materials. Your child will be able to make up all missed assignments upon return
