2 A Meeting in Philadelphia  Sept. 1774 - 55 delegates meet in Philadelphia  Called the Continental Congress  Key Members: John Adams, Sam Adams, John Jay, George Washington, Patrick Henry  Henry wanted colonies to resist the British

3 The Delegates Vote  Delegates filed grievances against the crown  Told Parliament to repeal their 13 acts  Boycotted all British goods  Called the Coercive Acts illegal

4 Fighting Begins  Colonists stored lots of weapons and ammunition  Minutemen were ready to fight within a minute’s notice

5 Great Britain Sends Troops  King George tells Parliament the colonies were “in a state of rebellion.”  April 1775, British sent thousands of troops  British General Gage went to take the colonies weapons at Concord, NH  Paul Revere and William Dawes rode to Lexington to warn Concord

6 Lexington and Concord  British marched toward Lexington  70 minutemen waited for them  Both sides fought  8 minutemen died  British then go to Concord  174 British wounded and 73 dead after fighting at Concord  American Colonies are now at war!

7 More Military Action  Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen took Ft. Ticonderoga from British

8 Battle of Bunker Hill  Boston militia now had over 20,000 men  Set up a base on Bunker and Breed’s Hills across from Boston Harbor  Redcoats assembled at Breed’s Hill  Prescott (militia commander) said “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes”  British first wave retreated  After the 3rd wave, colonists ran out of gunpowder and withdrew  British had over 1,000 killed or injured
