1 Health Vocabulary ► Overall Health = physical, emotional and social health of a person ► Wellness = Quality of life that results from a persons health status ► Risk factor- Something that increases the odds of a negative outcome ► Protective Factor- Something that increases the chances of a good outcome ► Quality of life= Degree to which a person lives life to the fullest capacity ► ► Habit- is a pattern of behavior that you follow almost without thinking.

2 Health Vocabulary ► Physical health- Condition of a person’s physical state ► Mental emotional health- Condition of a persons mind and the way that person expresses feelings ► Family social health- Condition of a persons relationship with family members and others

7 Social Wellness ► The process of creating and maintaining healthy relationships through the choices we make.

8 Physical Wellness ► The process of making choices to create flexible, cardiovascular fit, energetic and strong bodies.

9 Emotional Wellness ► The process of accepting our worth, creating, recognizing and expressing feelings in appropriate and healthy ways.

10 Intellectual Wellness ► The process of using our minds to create a greater understanding and appreciation for the universe. Thinking outside the box while respecting opinions and judgments made by those around us.

11 Environmental Wellness ► Making appropriate choices that positively effect our physical surroundings. Includes the improvement and maintenance of air, water and other physical resources that can be left for later generations.

12 Spiritual Wellness ► Developing a personal meaning for life through guiding values and principals.

13 Occupational / Financial ► Career Occupational Wellness A person’s level of satisfaction derived from their own work. ► Financial Wellness Satisfaction with current and future financial situations

14 Six behaviors that contribute to our wellness ► Be physically active ► Choosing a healthy diet ► Maintain a healthy body weight ► Manage stress ► Avoid Drugs, Tobacco and Alcohol ► Protect yourself from disease and injury

15 Wellness Continuum ► ► Health falls somewhere on a line (continuum) from a high level of health to a low level of health. ► ► Your CHOICES determine whether YOU have a High or Low level of health.

16 Risk = Taking chance that has a random outcome Health Concept = General understanding of health knowledge.

17 What is your change? ► To improve our health and wellness we must select or identify behavior changes that must be made to create BALANCE. ► Target Behavior- An isolated behavior selected as the object for a behavior change
