2 Words Used as Prepositions
Preposition – a word that relates a noun or pronoun that appears with it to another word in the sentence. above across against along behind below beside near on opposite outside upon Two men sat _______ a park bench _______ the street and _______ a tree.

3 Prepositional Phrases
Prepositional Phrase – is a group of words that includes a preposition and a noun or pronoun, called the OBJECT OF THE PREPOSITION. A preposition NEVER stands alone in a sentence; it is always used with a noun or pronoun. Put the prepositional phrase in parenthesis and circle the object of the preposition (OP)

4 Examples We had a picnic in the park.
I found my homework among the papers. The smoke drifted up the chimney. Shawn checked under the couch and chair. Sit beside me, and tell me about Paris. To this day, little is known of him aside from a fateful event in 1770. We walked next to a man on the sidewalk.

5 Preposition or Adverb? Prepositions always have objects; adverbs do not. People wandered through. Flowers grew along the path. We knew a park was near. The smoke drifted up the chimney. The park was near the house. The dark, ugly smoke drifted up. Won’t you come along with us?
