5 Comparison West Egg West Egg is where the newly rich live, bought or built extravagant houses to show off their newly acquired wealth that they earned. This can be called “new money” In the case of Jay Gatsby who is considered new money, which would be regarded with suspicion, as is the case with Tom who suspects that Gatsby has made his overnight fortune through bootlegging. The people of West Egg or “Westerners” would be considered honest and hardworking people. East Egg East Egg is the location where the rich people who have inherited family money from previous generations meaning each family has prestige and rich predecessors. This type of money can be “old money” as it is passed through the generations and given to the new generations without effort or work. For example Daisy and Tom Buchanan live in East Egg because Tom's family is old money. The people of East Egg are considered “Easterners” and are stereotyped as cold, indifferent and not to be trusted.
