6 WHAT IS PSAT/NMSQT?  PSAT = Preliminary SAT  NMSQT = National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test Junior Year  Over 1.5 million Juniors will test in October  50,000 high scorers will be identified in April Senior Year  16,000 Semifinalists & 34,000 Commended will be named in September  15,000 Finalists will be announced in February  Over 8,000 Scholarships will be awarded

7 SAT & ACT Registration dates 2015 - 2016 SAT: October 3 November 7 December 5 January 23 March 5 (No Subject Tests) May 7 June 4 Fee: $54.50 ACT: September 12 October 24 December 12 February 6 April 9 June 11 (MHS is not a site) Fee: $56.50

8 PSAT & SAT Comparison PSAT Critical Reading (80) Math (80) Writing Skills (80) No Essay Perfect Score = 240 SAT Critical Reading (800) Math (800) Writing Skills (800) Essay (2-12 Points) Perfect Score = 2400 National Merit Corporation determines who will be identified as Semifinalists or Commended based on the Selection Index of the PSAT scores from Junior Year Selection Index (SI) = CR + M + W

10 SAT/ACT Timeline  Take both SAT & ACT your Junior year.  PSAT- All Juniors will take PSAT Wednesday, October 15 th at MHS. NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED  Subject tests- No SAT subject tests are offered in March!

11 Official Transcripts  Must make one time decision regarding rank  Order through Naviance  Release forms available in Registrar’s office and MHS website  An official transcript must be sent to each college and university

16 PSAT ANSWER DOCUMENT ITEMS Completing your identifying information: Name: Must use your legal name (as shown on your birth certificate or social security card) for long last names, fill in as many spaces as possible include hyphens or blanks for double last names Address: leave a blank box between the number and street name for long street names, fill in as many spaces as possible Use street name abbreviations, as needed

17 Course Taking Questions Only English, Math, Science & Social Studies courses are listed Bubble the grade level/year in which you took the course Code your Pre-AP classes as ‘Honors’ include the core academic courses you are taking this year Student Search Service Lets colleges, scholarship programs & educational organizations know if you are interested in receiving information about educational and financial aid opportunities they offer. These organizations will NOT receive your actual TEST SCORES or TELEPHONE numbers!

18 Religion: helps you receive information from colleges with religious affiliations similar to your own College Major: Review the comprehensive list in your student bulletin! make a choice prior to test day (List of codes for religious preference & college majors will be available on test day) Grade Average: English, Math, Science & Social Studies classes only – calculate your grade average before test day! Give honest estimate, if you do not calculate before test day Highest Level of Education: prior to test day, ask your parent(s) about their educational background two columns will be available for parent responses
