2 Grammar What are they? Syllable : Syllables are words or parts of words in which a vowel sound is heard. Words that have more than one syllable are called polysyllabic (poly means more than one), or multisyllabic (multi- Polysyllabic Words: Roots & Affixes

3 Grammar What are they? means more than one. Therefore, polysyllabic words refers to words with more than one syllable. Polysyllabic Words: Roots & Affixes

4 Grammar Polysyllabic Words: Roots & Affixes What are roots? Simply put it means the main word inside a larger word that indicates what the word means.

5 Grammar Polysyllabic Words: Affixes What are Affixes? Syllables added onto the root word to change the meaning. They are called the prefix & suffix. Prefix : syllable at the beginning of the word. Suffix : syllable at the end of the word.

6 Grammar Polysyllabic Words: Why is this important to you? You can figure out the meanings of new words by learning about the three parts! Let’s look at some example to demonstrate this point….

7 Grammar Polysyllabic Words: Why is this important to you? Knowing that the prefix ‘non’ means ‘not’ helps you figure out the meaning of the word ‘nonsense’: something that does not make sense.

8 Grammar Polysyllabic Words: Why is this important to you? Let’s look at another one: Knowing that the suffix ‘less’ means ‘without’ helps you figure out the meaning of ‘senseless’: without sense.

9 Grammar Polysyllabic Words: Let’s look at PREFIXES When a prefix is attached to a word, its meaning combines with the meaning of the original word to form a new word with a different meaning, but they are related.

10 Grammar Polysyllabic Words: Know the common PREFIXES! Before you can use word parts well, however, you must learn the meaning of some of the most widely used prefixes, suffixes, and roots in our language. This will help you learn unknown words in your reading.

11 Grammar Polysyllabic Words: Let’s look at some examples of prefixes: Anti (against) Example: antipollutant Meaning: it works against pollution Auto (self) Example: autobiography Meaning: writing about yourself

12 Grammar Polysyllabic Words: More examples of prefixes: bi, bin (two) Example: binocular Meaning: having 2 eyes co (together) Example: copilot Meaning: one who helps the pilot

23 Grammar Polysyllabic Words: Roots & Affixes How do you recognize root words? Knowing the root word-especially a difficult word-can help you understand the meaning of the larger word when you are familiar with prefixes and suffixes.

24 Grammar Polysyllabic Words: Roots & Affixes How do you recognize root words? Look for the word you know attached to a prefix or suffix? Look at these words: Ant acid : bitter or sour New meaning with prefix: not sour or bitter.

25 Grammar Polysyllabic Words: Roots & Affixes How do you recognize root words? Look for the word you know: Acrophopia: fear New meaning with prefix: fear of high places export: to carry New meaning with prefix: carry out.

27 Putting it into Practice: Grammar Read the following passage: Genesis 5:1-15, The Message Respond in your journal on the following: 1.What is the main idea of this passage?

28 Grammar (Make sure you support your opinion by using the text) 2. Edit your journal entry for sentence structure and sentence lengths. 3. Record words you had trouble with. Use context clues /dictionary.
