2. A suffix is a group of letters added to the end of a word
A suffix is a group of letters added to the end of a word. It adds meaning or changes the meaning of the word.
The word the suffix is added to is called the root or base word.
When a suffix begins with a vowel, a change in the base word is needed.

3. We have already learned about a few suffixes in previous lessons.
We learned about -er and -est when talking about adjectives and adverbs in lessons 16 and 18.

4. In lesson 19, we learned about words that have a -y ending.
We also learned about adding -ing in lesson 26.

5. We learned rules for adding -er, -est, -y and -ing
We learned rules for adding -er, -est, -y and -ing. These rules apply to all suffixes that begin with a vowel like able and ed.
Rule #1
If the root words ends in e, drop the e then add the suffix.

6. Rule #2
If the root words ends in a consonant + y change the y to an i then add the suffix. (Keep the y when adding ing)
Rule #3
If the root word ends in a vowel + y, just add the suffix.

7. Rule #4
Words with one syllable, one vowel, and one ending consonant, the final consonant is doubled before adding the suffix.

8. Suffixes that begin with a consonant do not follow these rules
Suffixes that begin with a consonant do not follow these rules. They are simply added to the root word as they are.
Some examples of these suffixes are -ful, -ly, -less and -ness.

9. Write the base word with the suffix.
care+ less
careless
hope + ful
hopeful
love+ able
lovable
sad+ ness
sadness
sincere +ly
sincerely

10. care+ ing
caring
graceful
grace + ful
believable
believe+ able
gladness
glad+ ness
near +ly
nearly
red+ ish
reddish

In order to figure out the words meaning you must look at how the word is used in the sentence.

The elephant used his trunk to splash water.
We store costumes in a trunk in the attic.

The word fair means 1.carnival or 2. equal and just.
Chris rode the Ferris wheel at the fair.
It is not fair that I have to go to bed earlier than my sister.

15. Multiple Meaning Words
The word watch means 1.a device to tell time or 2.to look at with one's eyes.
Kayla got a new watch for her birthday.
Did you watch the movie you rented?
