1. Defining the “F-Words” for The Outsiders No worries, these words are school appropriate and you can say them in front of your parents!

2. Flashback Definition: A scene inserted into a film, play, or work of fiction showing events that happened earlier. Characteristics:  Fill in background information about characters and events.  Help move the plot forward, meaning that the information that is shared becomes important to past and present events. Non-example: It is different than a memory because it is almost as though the narrator takes the readers back in time to provide the details as they happened.

3. Flashback What major event do we learn about in Chapter 2? Look at page 31. Keep your finger there and flip to page 34. What do you notice about those pages that might suggest a flashback has been inserted? Look at the first phrase after the section break on page 31. What words give you a clue that they are going back in time? When we look at the characteristics that you just typed on your chart, we can see that Johnny getting jumped fits this criteria. Type that into the Examples portion of your Frayer Model.

4. Foreshadowing Definition: occurs when a writer provides hints that suggest future events in the story. Characteristics: Sounds like a clue, or maybe even a hint of something that will become more important later. Often occurs before something big happens so you may not recognize it until later. Non-example:  It is not a direct statement that allows the reader to know what will happen. It is far more subtle than that. Examples: Write down the specific quotes & pages numbers

5. Foreshadowing continued… Before you can fill in the “Examples” portion of your Frayer Model, flip to page 36. There is statement on that page where it suggests that Ponyboy’s thinking will change. You probably do not know why this will happen, but what does he say on that page that suggests something might change? Write down this example. Use quotation marks and page numbers. You will be adding another example after you finish your INDEPENDENT reading of the rest of Chapter 3.
