2 What is Oral Communication ? Oral Communication is designed…  To strengthen the skills considered important for future career success  To make you an effective and fluent communicator  To demonstrate success in working and communicating in groups

3 Units of Study Oral Communication is divided into 6 different speech units. Oral Communication is divided into 6 different speech units. Each unit will have a speech.

4 Preparation and Delivery This unit teaches you how to…  prepare a speech  deliver a speech  manage stage fright

6 Senior Citizen/Famous Person Speech  Senior Citizen (55 or older)  Led an intriguing life  Achieved impressive accomplishments  Lived through a memorable experience  Famous Person  Significant contribution  Arts  Entertainment  Politics  Athletics  World of ideas  Society in general

7 Listening & Evaluating, Propaganda Techniques This unit will teach you how to be an effective listener and evaluator. You will learn about media influences.

8 Propaganda Presentation As a group you will identify and label different propaganda techniques found in magazine advertisements. This will be presented to the class.

10 Informative Speech This unit teaches you how to…  inform the audience about a topic  demonstrate how something is done

11 Informative Speech 4-6 minutes with a Visual Speech of Enlightenment OR Demonstration Speech

12 Persuasive Speech Unit This unit will teach you how to persuade your audience to change their opinions or act on a policy.

13 Persuasive Speech 4-6 minutes with a Visual You will be required to… Choose a controversial topic Do research Persuade the audience

14 The Usual Pattern of this Course  Speech is assigned. You prepare it out of class.  Textbook chapters are read and study guides completed in class. Quiz?  The information in the chapter is discussed, reviewed.  Test  Workshop day for speech  Speech

15 Course Requirements Every student must satisfactorily complete each speech or presentation. Each student must take the final exam. Final Exam is open notebook! (You may use your study guides.)

16 Tests and Quizzes Each unit will have a study guide quiz and a chapter test. Study guide quizzes are open notes. No notes on chapter tests!

17 Listening Points Each student will be given 100/100 points at the beginning of each marking period. Any student that is not listening during speeches will lose 5 points per action.

18 “I hate giving speeches…” Penalties  Failure to give your speech on your due date will result in a deduction of 15% each class period you are not prepared.  Chewing gum during your speech will result in a 5-point deduction from your speech grade.

19 Supplies 3 x 5 note cards  You will use these for your speeches.  I will try to provide as many as I can. Notebooks  This will be your main source of information.  I will not collect notebooks, so you may share with another subject.

20 Class Policies Following the rules will help you succeed in Oral Comm!

21 Mrs. Godfrey’s Classroom Rules Come to class prepared –Bring a pencil/pen –Bring your notebook

22 Classroom rules cont’d Electronics are not permitted (school rule) CD players Ipods Do not bring food or drink in the room (school rule)

23 Cell Phones Cell phone rules: May be with you, but not on No making or receiving calls No text messaging No checking messages Parents should not be contacting you

24 R-E-S-P-E-C-T Do not talk when I am talking. Do not touch other people’s personal property. Remain in your seat until the bell rings.

25 Attendance is Neat!  Be prepared to give speech when you return.  Come to class with an admit slip.  Check the absentee bin.  Make up tests/quizzes within a week!
