1  1. Analyze each character and select your 8 people  How will they contribute to the group?  2. Take 3 – 5 minutes to compare your list to someone around you.  Are there any similarities?

2  3. Answer the following:  What did you use to guide your decision making, morality or practicality? Why?  Provide a brief explanation for how you think your group will function as time passes.  Who will be in charge?  How will you determine this?  How will decisions be made?  Where do you see potential problems or conflicts among your group members?

3  Study of group behavior through the use of scientific data.  Sociologists are social scientists.  They observe social behavior, conduct experiments and study how society influences and shapes people and ….  How people influence and shape society.

4  Sociological perspective:  Looking at social life in a scientific, systematic way, rather than depending on common sense explanations found in the media.  Ignore the stereotypes and biases and look for deeper reasons why things take place.

5  Sociological imagination  The ability to see the connection between the larger world and your personal life.  How does society affect you? ▪ Poverty ▪ Government ▪ Crime ▪ Education, etc…

6  The Sociological Imagination helps to understand why we behave the way that we do.  What influences your behavior?  Culture  Geography  Social Class  Family  Friends  Media  Life experiences, etc…

7  Life changed greatly during the Industrial Revolution in Europe (1800’s).  People worked more and spent less time with their families.  Cities grew and many became overpopulated.

8  Take a few minutes and list some of the different ways that social media has affected American society.  How does social media influence people’s lives and behavior?  How does the internet influence our society?

9  Social Media is a great platform for spreading ideas, trends, etc….  The ice bucket challenge has raised over 94 million dollars.  It has also raised awareness for diseases like ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease)

11  As cities became overcrowded and life became more stressful problems arose.  Alcoholism, domestic violence, suicide all increased during this period.  Sociology was created to study these problems and hopefully find solutions.

12  Since sociologists interact with and study people they must be very careful when conducting experiments.  Close read the article on the, “Tuskegee Experiment,” as an example of an immoral medical/sociological experiment.
