Industrial Revolution Begins

Brain Storm: What may have been the cause of the Industrial Revolution? o List anything and everything you think is a possibility. o You can even draw a picture that represents the cause.

Objective Students will be able to:  Identify the causes of the industrial revolution  Evaluate the impacts (effects) of industrialization on the different aspects of life

Dawn of the Industrial Age For thousands of years following the rise of civilizations humans:  Lived in small towns or villages  Farmed or performed skilled trades with their hands  Tools were rudimentary and powered by man or animal

Life changes as industry spreads In 1750, people worked with their hands and were self reliant. What does this mean? Travel was limited to walking or carriage distances. What happens during the industrial revolution that makes this way of living disappear?

Agriculture Spurs Industry Farming Methods Improve o Up until 300 years ago, farming had remained the same (11,000 yrs). o People now began to combine small fields into larger ones. o Soil was now fertilized, soils mixed for optimal production o Crops rotated, so soil is now used more efficiently. o The seed drill introduces an effective way to deposit seeds in rows.

Agriculture spurs industry continued Enclosure Increases Output and Migrations o Rich landowners consolidated lands once shared by peasant farmers. (enclosure) o What does this mean, and what impacts will this have on farmers? o Creating larger fields allowed for crops to be cultivated more efficiently. o This practice was backed in the form of a law by the British parliament.

Agriculture Spurs Industry Cont... Positive impacts of Enclosure. o Farm output rose o Profits increased for landowners Negative impacts of Enclosure. o Fewer workers are needed o Competition too strong for independent farmers o Village population decline

Agriculture Spurs Industry Cont... Population Multiplies o Thanks to improved farming methods and enclosure Europe experiences a population boom. o Britain's population increases from 5 to 9 million people in just 100 years. o Why did this population increase occur?

New Technology Becomes Key An Energy Revolution o By the 1700s, people began to use coal as a new source of energy. This energy would soon be manifested in the form of steam. o The steam engine is developed by the British and fine tuned by the Scottish becoming a key power source. o The steam engine helped develop machinery in assembly lines, and eventually leads to powering locomotives and steam ships helping facilitate transportation and trade.

New Technology Becomes Key Cont... The Quality of Iron Improves o Coal also powered the production of iron. o Iron was the “needed” material to construct machines and steam engines. o Abraham Darby’s experiments with coal led to the production of less expensive and higher quality Iron. This iron was also used to create railways(tracks) for the new steam powered trains.

Britain Leads the Way Why Britain? o Natural Resources Abound  Natural resources, canals, and ports.  Resources and Industries in England, 1750 Resources and Industries in England, 1750 o The Effects of Demand and Capita l  Ready workforce  Population explosion  Demand for goods  Surplus of capital (money) from slave trade domination and trade in colonies

The Textile Industry Advances Inventions Speed Production o Inventions like the Cotton Gin, and Spinning Jenny help produce cotton goods which were used in everyday life. One Thing Leads to Another o The industrial revolution triggered a chain reaction. o Developers ==> Machines ==>Mass Produced goods = Affordable to the masses. o This leads to massive social changes.

Exit Slip: What event of the industrial revolution do you think had the most significant impact. o Explain why. o Make sure to support you answer with evidence from the past couple of days

Then...

What ? Answer the follow up questions from the song.
