2 Marketing a Film Our A2 production coursework is all about marketing a film Your brief asks you to create 1. A teaser trailer 2. A film poster 3. A film magazine cover featuring your new release. Today’s lesson objectives: By the end of the lesson all students will establish and understand the common practices when marketing a new film Discuss the importance of genre as a classifying tool

3 When a film is made it has to be advertised like any other new product, to let people know it exists and to encourage them to go to the cinema to see it. The people responsible for advertising the film are the distribution company, so-called because they distribute the films to the cinemas and distribute the promotional material around the country.

4 Press Kits These are sent to journalists all over the world to give them information about forthcoming films Kits Include: -A set of stills: images form the film itself, studio portraits of the stars that have been authorised for printing in newspapers and magazines -A list of cast and Crew Credits: all info is to hand and names spelt correctly! -Production Notes: a synopsis of the film, any interesting info about costumes, locations, castings and how the stars feel about their roles -Biographies and Filmographies of the cast, director and producer

5 Websites Film websites can be official or unofficial. An official website is set up by the distributors of the film as part of the marketing campaign An unofficial website is set up by fans wanting to express their own opinions and exchange information with other fans

10 An official website will be designed to complement the ‘look’ of a marketing campaign, with the same graphics and images used as in the poster and trailer Websites are very effective in raising awareness at a much earlier stage and to a far greater interactive extent than was previously possible.

13 Genre as Classification We all know that genre is a means of classifying which allows us as to group together films according to narrative and film style. Within each genre we can classify into further sub-genres. Try to name two films with sub genres

14 Identifying Genre Initial impressions The title of a film is what first catches our attention and arouses our interest in a film. The choice of a title is a crucial part of the marketing campaign and can make a big difference as to whether or not the film is successful at the box office. Name a few titles that grabbed you this summer. Then think of some that were not as effective.
