Ethnic Groups --This term indicates a group that is set apart from others primarily because of its national origin or distinctive cultural patterns. Racial Groups can contain Ethnic Sub Groups and vice versa.:. Importantly, individuals can often choose to identify or hide ethnic identity, but not race identity.

Biological Significance of Race --(obvious physical differences) arbitrarily chosen (like eye color) --There is more genetic variation within “races” than across them. Discrimination --the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups based on some type of arbitrary bias. --persists even for educated and qualified minority group members. Prejudice= Attitude Discrimination = Action/behavior

11 Minority Groups A subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power (in society, over their own lives) than members of the dominant or majority group. Properties of a minority group can include: unequal treatment Distinguish- ing cultural characteris- tics involuntary membership Prejudice and Discrimination: The Vicious Cycle not necessarily a number thing! Women -Not numerical minority, but a minority group.

12 Prejudice and Discrimination: The Vicious Cycle Stereotypes --an unreliable generalization about all members of a group that do not recognize individual differences within the group. Racism--a belief that one race is supreme and all others are innately inferior. Ethnocentrism--the tendency to assume that one’s culture and way of life are superior to all others.
