5 EYFS Statutory Framework
. When the children join us in Reception, we begin looking at the three prime areas.  Communication and language;  Physical development; and  Personal, social and emotional development. As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are:  Literacy;  Mathematics;  Understanding the world; and  Expressive arts and design. Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside. Your child will have daily access to the outdoors and will have a opportunities to learn through whole group, small group and individualised learning opportunities. This maybe led by the teacher or initiated by the child.

8 Reading – Fostering a love of books
Reading in Reception starts with the teaching of phonics, through daily discrete sessions. However, this is just one part of our multi –faceted approach to reading. The children experience whole class reading, with timetabled story times and shared reading. Guided reading sessions also form part of the day, where we take a small group of children to read at their current level and children are given many opportunities to access our book corners throughout the day. Children are also given a reading book, based on their current level of progress and visit the library to take home a new book each week. The children’s reading development is assessed regularly and progress is maximised when children are able to read at home daily for 5-10 minutes. Reading books will be changed on a regular basis.

9 Reading Your child will receive a reading diary with their reading book. Please sign daily when you have heard your child read. We will also sign their reading diary so you can see when an adult has heard them read. When your child needs to change their reading book please remind them in the morning and we will ask all children to put their reading book and reading diary in the tray. One of the adults will then change the reading books in the tray. If your child has not put their book in the tray you can model it for your child at the end of the day and we will change it the following day. Your child will also get a log in which will enable them to access books online. These books will be allocated to your child to ensure your child can read and enjoy them. This log in and password will follow later.

10 Handwriting abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
This year, we are introducing the cursive font to all year groups at Bradley Barton School. Reception children will learn how to form all letters before starting phonics this half term. The children are supported with this in fun, age appropriate activities and throughout the day through our continuous provision activities. Cursive font will enable the children to form whole words as a unit, which in turn will support the learning of spelling and spelling patterns as they progress through the school. The cursive font alphabet can be found in sheets at the front if you wish to take one home to support your child’s learning. Please remember this is new to the whole school and not just the Reception children – it is a working progress !

11 Partnerships with Parents
We recognise the importance of parents as partners in children’s learning and development. We would like you to contribute to their learning journeys with comments, certificates and photographs. We will send learning journeys home regularly so you can celebrate your child’s’ learning with them and their friends and family. We would like to offer parents the opportunity to volunteer in the EYFS unit and help our learners reach their full potential. This could be changing reading books, listening to children read or sharing one of your own talents with us and the children. If you would like to volunteer please speak to your child’s class teacher.

12 Home Learning Your child will begin receiving home learning challenges as the term progresses. These will be fun activities that provide the children with the opportunity to master the skills they have been learning in school and to develop their knowledge in the topic. We encourage family and friends to work with the child to complete the learning and celebrate their achievements. We would like you to record their learning so we to can celebrate their achievements at school. Your child will also receive phonics homework weekly. This gives your child the opportunity to practise the letters and sounds of the week. If you are unsure of the sounds your child brings home please ask any of the adults in the EYFS and we will be happy to help.

13 Belongings Please ensure children bring their book bags, daily. We will put any information in your childs book bag, including; letters, home work and accident forms Your child will need a PE kit from October half term. We will send PE kits home at the end of every half term. Your child can have a water bottle in class. This needs to be labelled and must only have water inside. We provide all children with one piece of fruit daily. This varies on a daily basis. Your child can bring their own healthy snack to school, it must have their name on it or remain in their book bag until snack time.

14 Accidents and Illness If your child is has had a stomach bug they can return to school 48hours after the last symptom. All this information can be found on the school website. Headlice should be treated before your child comes into school. If we identify your child has Head Lice during the school day we will advise you and you will have the option to collect your child from school so you can treat them asap. You child can then return to school on the same day Accidents: If your child bumps their head at school you will receive a phone call. In most cases you do not need to do anything but is our school policy to inform you when head bumps occur. All other minor accidents will be recorded and your child will bring an accident form home to inform you of the accident and any first aid received.
