Matter Is anything that takes up space

States of Matter Liquid – it does not have a definite shape and its particles move freely. Ex:Water,Alcohol,Turpentine,Petrol,Kerosen Matter matters dog!

States of Matter Gas- Has no definite shape and it can fill a jar and make it larger. Its particles move very freely. Ex: Oxygen,Air,Burps, natural gas,Steam,Volcanoes,

States of Matter Solid- has a definite shape and does not move at all. Ex:Brick,Rock,Ps3, Xbox360,fish tank.

Physical & chemical changes Physical change: are reversible and you are not changing state. Chemical change: are reversible and you are changing the state. Ex: physical: dissolving, melting, freezing, sublimating, Evaporation. Ex: chemical: gas given off, temperature, change of odor, bottle rocket, fire works.

Physical and chemical properties Physical properties collect electricity. Chemical properties does not gather electricity. Ex: physical: Color, shape, volume, density. Ex: chemical: flammability, Rusting, reactivity, wood, acid.

Atoms A unit of matter, the smallest unit of an element. Proton, Neutron, Electron.

Elements An element is a substance that is made entirely from one type of atom. Ex: hydrogen, helium, lithium, beryllium and boron.

Compounds A combination of two or more elements or parts. Ex:Sodium chloride Aluminum oxide Sodium oxide Potassium chloride H2o

Periodic Table It’s a table to arrange all elements. You look at the atomic # and Element symbol and find the element. The patterns shown in the periodic table are stair case shaped and has a different color.

Substances and mixtures A substance cant be broken or separated Mixture can be separated using physical processes.

Heterogeneous and homogeneous Mixtures Homogenous mixtures are ones in which you cannot see the different parts that make it up. Heterogeneous mixtures are ones that you can make out and separate the different parts easily. Heterogeneous:Ex:Salad dressing, Big Mac secret sauce, Ice tea, Chicken soup, Tomato juice. Homogeneous: air, brass, milk, wine, alcohol.

Solutions A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. Solute: A substance dissolved in another substance. Solvent: A substance, usually a liquid, capable of dissolving another substance. Ex: solute: Water,Salt,Chocolate powder, sugar, squash. Ex: Solvent: Bromine, copper, Oil, Mercury, wallpaper stripper.

Solubility Solubility: The amount of a substance that can be dissolved in a given amount of solvent.
