What is a Family? According to US Census Bureau: A group of two or more people who reside together who are related by birth, marriage or adoption.

What is the Family’s Functions? Safety Shelter Food Education Through example Through talking-providing direction Through religious training Social and Emotional Needs

Types of Families Nuclear: A mother, a father and at least 1 child Single-Parent: Either a Mother or Father, and at least one child Blended Family: Single parent marries another single parent, building a new family. May have stepparents, stepbrothers and sisters. Extended: Relatives other than parents living in the home (Grandparents)

Let’s think… What are the advantages of: A nuclear family? A blended family? What are the disadvantages of: A nuclear family? A blended family?

Family Vocabulary Adoption: legal process in which children enter a family they were not born into. Foster children: Children who need a temporary home until their parents are able take care of them. Family life cycle: Series of stages all families go through.

Outside influence on Families Mobility Families move often, having less support than they used to. Effects? Cultural diversity Transition from other cultures to the US-lose family support, sometimes cultural traditions Effects?

Outside Influences Cont’d Aging population Living longer than ever. Parents taking care of children and parents – sandwich generation. Effects? Economic changes 2 working parents, smaller families Effects?

Wrap - up No matter what type of family you have, family is very important to your development There is no singular definition of a family, but they all provide love, support and growth. ALL FAMILIES SHOULD BE RESPECTED! Move on to Family Life Cycle
