1 Good morning! 2/3/14  Today we are:  Learning about families  Functions  Influences  Life Cycles  Wednesday or Friday:  Quiz on Studying childhood and families

2 What is a Family?  According to US Census Bureau: A group of two or more people who reside together who are related by birth, marriage or adoption.

3 What is the Family’s Functions?  Safety  Shelter  Food  Education  Through example  Through talking-providing direction  Through religious training  Social and Emotional Needs

4 Types of Families  Nuclear: A mother, a father and at least 1 child  Single-Parent: Either a Mother or Father, and at least one child  Blended Family: Single parent marries another single parent, building a new family. May have stepparents, stepbrothers and sisters.  Extended: Relatives other than parents living in the home (Grandparents)

5 Let’s think…  What are the advantages of:  A nuclear family?  A blended family?  What are the disadvantages of:  A nuclear family?  A blended family?

6 Family Vocabulary  Adoption: legal process in which children enter a family they were not born into.  Foster children: Children who need a temporary home until their parents are able take care of them.  Family life cycle: Series of stages all families go through.

7 Outside influence on Families  Mobility  Families move often, having less support than they used to.  Effects?  Cultural diversity  Transition from other cultures to the US-lose family support, sometimes cultural traditions  Effects?

8 Outside Influences Cont’d  Aging population  Living longer than ever. Parents taking care of children and parents – sandwich generation.  Effects?  Economic changes  2 working parents, smaller families  Effects?

9 Wrap - up  No matter what type of family you have, family is very important to your development  There is no singular definition of a family, but they all provide love, support and growth.  ALL FAMILIES SHOULD BE RESPECTED!  Move on to Family Life Cycle
