4 Attendance  Carroll County Public Schools recognizes the importance between attendance and academic success.  Please contact the school every day your child will not be present for learning.  Please make arrangements to obtain missed class work if applicable.  Please contact the school nurse or school counselor, if your child’s absence will be more than three days due to illness or emotional concerns. There may be supports available for you and your child.  Please provide written documentation (handwritten note sent in with your child, faxed note (fax # 410-751-3537), or email (preattendance@carrollk12.org) as to the reason for the absence upon your child’s return to school.preattendance@carrollk12.org  For more information regarding attendance and attendance procedures please see the student handbook, or the Student Services Manual located on the CCPS website

6 RUE’s Birthday Policy  We discourage the handing out of birthday invitations in the classroom.  Edible treats may not be sent in due to food allergies!  Alternative possibilities include pencils, stickers, goody bags, etc.

8 Field Trips  FIELD TRIPS ARE ALIGNED TO THE CURRICULUM & ARE CONSIDERED PART OF OUR INSTRUCTIONAL TIME!!!  In order to chaperone, you MUST have completed a volunteer training at least 7 days prior to the trip  Please send in a money order or check made out to Runnymede Elementary  We will try to accommodate as many chaperones as we can for each trip ** Be on the look-out for details on trip locations during the year!!

9 Scholastic Book Orders  Homeroom teachers will be sending home Scholastic books orders throughout the school year  You can order online or send a check into school with the order form (checks made payable to Scholastic)  Scholastic allows you to…  Choose from a variety of grade and reading level specific books for your child  Earn free books for the classroom library

10 What is PBIS???  The application of evidence-based strategies and systems to assist schools:  to increase academic performance  increase safety  decrease problem behavior  and establish positive school cultures

11 PBIS BIG Ideas  Positive Behavior Support is a process for teaching children appropriate behavior and providing the supports necessary to sustain that behavior.  PBIS is not a curriculum - it is a framework for systems to identify needs, develop strategies, and evaluate practice toward success

22 Reading  Literary Skills  Analyze Story Structure (Describe Characters, Setting, Plot, Problem and Solution)  Summarize/Retell/Sequence of Events  Make and Confirm Predictions  Informational Skills  Text Features  Main Idea and Details/Summarizing  Compare and Contrast  The ELA block also includes: Word Study, Vocabulary, and Grammar  Cause and Effect  Make Inferences  Literary Elements (Alliteration, Rhythmic Patterns, Rhyme)  Distinguish Between Fantasy and Reality  Text Structure  Author’s Purpose

23 Writing  Students will write for three purposes  Opinion  Information/Explanatory  Narrative  Grammar will be taught during writing  Rubrics will be attached to writing assignments that will be in the writing section of the data binder  Students will be learning cursive in the spring

24 Assessments  Reading and fluency are assessed in September, January, and May  Reading Comprehension  Sight Words  Reading  Spelling  Houghton Mifflin (decoding assessment)  Writing assessments on the different types of writing (opinion, informative/explanatory, narrative)

25 Homework  Read for 15 minutes every night  Students are expected to read at least 500 minutes a quarter. Please record minutes read and sign the homework chart every night! At the end of the quarter, student who read 500 or more minutes can earn a prize.  Prizes will vary, but may include: extra recess, pencils, stickers, notepads, etc.  Sight Words  Every Wednesday beginning in mid-September the Sight Word Folder will come home  The folder includes 300 words. The highlighted words are the words your child already knows. Please practice reading the words that are not highlighted. Once all the words are highlighted please practice writing and spelling the words. The Sight Word Folder contains a list of activities to help with reading, writing, and spelling the words.  Word Study  Word study lists will be added to the homework calendar in mid- September. Students should practice reading, writing, and spelling these words throughout the week.
